If you are one of the lucky ones to have scored a ticket to the sold-out performance of Itzhak Perlman’s Cinema Serenade, you already know what an amazing treat that was. I was fortunate to attend the dress rehearsal of this performance. It was a rare behind-the-scenes look at what goes into one of Utah Symphony’s amazing performances.

This concert, featuring the world-renowned violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman, was a varied performance of many of our favorite cinema scores. Perlman started playing violin at the age of 3, self-teaching himself with a toy fiddle until he was big enough to hold an actual violin. Due to contracting polio as a child, he performs seated. He has spent many years studying and performing the violin and is one of the most sought-after performers in the world. Utah Symphony is excited to have him once again join them in performing at Abravanel Hall.

From Love Story (arranged and performed by Perlman himself) to the music from Out of Africa, Perlman performs as only he can. He pulls such emotion and passion from the familiar tunes. I was moved to tears as he played the theme from Schindler’s List, a personal favorite of mine. The crooning of his violin is like nothing I’ve ever heard before and I hope to be afforded the opportunity to hear it again someday.

In addition to the selections with Perlman, the Utah Symphony also performed other notable cinematic music selections from E.T., Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and many others, leading to what is a lively and fun performance in its entirety. Even though I only witnessed their dress rehearsal, I can envision how epic the actual performance will be.

If you, like me, are sad to have missed out on the full performance of this sold-out event, then I highly recommend Utah Symphony’s upcoming events: Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No 2 (Oct 20, 21), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 (Oct 26,27,28) or Beethoven’s Ninth (Nov 3,4). You can check out their amazing lineup of these and other fantastic performances here.
