Salt Lake City’s Utah Symphony finished out the summer last night with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic, Jurassic Park, at West Valley’s USANA Amphitheater. The last film in concert performance until November, Utah Symphony’s combination of live music and ancient dinosaurs is absolutely thrilling. As the movie’s scientists soon discover the dire consequences of their amusement park, the tension rises. The frightened squeals of delight from the audience coupled with the universally recognized musical score makes for a great night.
Led by musical director Thierry Fischer, the instrumentalists of the Utah Symphony transport the audience to the island of Isla Nublar. Each bow stroke, piano key, and trumpet blare recreates John Williams’ original score in a new and exciting medium for the audience. As a viola player myself, I truly relish the opportunity to switch between watching the movie and watching the players.
Though I’m familiar with the film, it seemed even more fun, even scarier with Williams’ gorgeous score pounding from the symphony artists. It gave this already amazing movie even more punch. If you think you know movies, you don’t until you’ve seen a great movie played and performed like this.
The Utah Symphony has really created something great with their film in concert series. Watching the movie and listening to the live music is a fun and accessible way to bring the arts to Utah. This is also a family-friendly event as evidenced by all the excited children in the surrounding audience at the beautiful USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley City.
