Take a family-friendly trip to the island of Illyria at Utah Children’s Theatre’s production of Twelfth Night in Salt Lake City. Part of UCT’s 2018 Shakespeare Festival (7th Annual Shakespeare Festival for Kids & Adults) this unexpectedly hilarious comedy is one of Shakespeare’s most accessible shows and is amusing to both children and adults alike. Twelfth Night was my first audience experience at UCT, and I can now say with confidence that I will be back.
The cast as an ensemble is contagiously energetic and laugh out loud funny. The dialogue is engaging and well-delivered. Chemistry between the actors is through the roof and renews the dynamic Shakespearean humor. Leads Tennessee Tarrant, Larissa Anderson, Bryson Ross Dumas, Zach Vayo, Cole Lawson, Meighan Smith, and Lexie Thomsen are capstones in the cast of 14. Dumas, Lawson, and Smith as Toby, Andrew and Maria, drive the plot with their hysterics and abundant physical comedy. Vayo reprising his role as Malvolio had me rolling in laughter, his truly ridiculous portrayal is certainly a highlight of the show. And who could forget Tarrant, Anderson, and Thomsen as Duke Orsino, Olivia, and Viola? Their mistaken identity love triangle had me squirming in my seat in second-hand embarrassment for their characters, as I’m sure Shakespeare intended.

The production crew truly deserves to be praised for their efforts. UCT’s Twelfth Night is set in Illyria, which according to Director Joanne M. Parker the, is an island off the coast of California. Filled with vibrant costumes, lighting, and sound design, this show is a sensory feast. I felt immersed in the unique Hispanic flair of the show. Adding slight tweaks to Shakespeare’s dialogue, Parker creates a fresh take on a classic show that everyone can enjoy.
Be sure to take your family and don’t miss this lighthearted romp. It isn’t often that you can bring children to a Shakespeare play and have them not die of boredom or fall asleep. Your kids will think Twelfth Night jolly good fun. Don’t miss UCT’s fun production!
