JayC Stoddard and Natalia V. Noble have joined forces to examine the topic of consent in their intricate and psychomachian script that tells the story of a woman who has been wronged. Many of the details of the play as far as the plot and characters are concerned would quantify as spoilers, so I do not wish to expand too much on them, but I will say that I was titillated by questions from the get-go. Questions such as “who are these people really”, “what did this man do to this woman”, and “what on earth is going on”.

The play is a journey, and it centers on Mandi Titcomb as the host of a podcast set to interview a notorious killer (Gavin) played by Stoddard. She shares a history with her sound tech Skylar (John R. Belliston), and, though she insists on him leaving, he assures her that his presence is the only way for the show to go forward that day. They are soon joined by Gavin, a man who went to prison in the 1990s for killing his family, and his “companion” Evelynne, played by Jillian Joy.  From the moment Joy was onstage, I felt there was something amiss. Joy plays her character on the edge of sociopathic, her snide reactions and nearly gleeful responses to Gavin’s tale of slaughter distinctly non-human. There was something going on in this little group of people, and it was unsettling.

The script reiterates the notion that truth and fact are not always synonymous, and I would quite agree. The theme that was most alluring to me, however, was one of revenge versus vengeance. The line between righteous anger and rancor is sometimes so thin it hovers in nebulous non-existence, and the fervor with which I rooted for the latter in this circumstance didn’t surprise me. The last line of the play rattled through me and I wanted to stand up and cheer for the brutal way in which Titcomb delivers it.

Utah Rep’s Turn to Page 93 is a mature and daedal script, and a trigger warning is certainly in effect. The acting is surprising and graceful, and the execution of the subject matter is a fine example of how to handle such things in a responsible manner.
