From the moment Ryon J. Sharette steps onstage as Louis XIV regaled in sparkling silk, over-sized jewels, and a positively enormous wig, I am tickled. He begs the audience for applause, caring not how cheaply it is earned, and struts around the stage, soaking up the adulation like Balm of Gilead. He speaks in an outrageous French accent, and within seconds one realizes that everything he is saying is directly lifted from a Trump speech.
The script is bold, fearless, and hysterically funny. References to the French court circa the mid-17th century are utilized in drawing direct comparisons to the Trump administration, and Sharette’s continued references to the Sun King’s full title felt increasingly self-aggrandizing and braggadocious as the play continues. His effortless hilarity and handling of the subject had me in stitches, and I found the entire thing utterly perfect.
The play is a short one, but it is masterfully directed by JC Carter, who grasped the intention of L.L. West’s teasing and provocative script. The effect is rollicking entertainment, and I enjoyed every second of it.
