By Ryan Hopkins
My Suicide Note is presented by Collin Williams, a stand-up comedian who presents the darkest parts of his life story with brutal honesty and hilarious observations. His tour has brought him to the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival at the Gateway in an intimate venue appropriate for the subject matter he shares with the audience. He started touring when he was 17 all over the West in comedy clubs and colleges. He has earned a nomination as one of Utah’s top comedians with his brand of pitch black humor.
The show is setup much like many stand-up comedy shows; a person with microphone talking to the audience. The small size of the venue, however, lends itself to make the show feel as if your best friend is confiding their most terrible secrets to you. Williams makes and keeps eye contact with many of the audience members throughout the show, making us all participants in what feels like an exorcising of demons. The way to deal with these demons is stare them down and laugh at them, which is exactly what he has done. His honesty about how he feels about the events that happened to him and how he feels about himself is shocking and comforting.
I strongly recommend Collin Williams’ My Suicide Note to any mature audiences who wish to hear from someone who has had some of the worst life experiences and survived his own psychological pain. I will however put a trigger warning here. Topics he covers include: sexual abuse, rape, incest, mental illness, and suicide. This show is laughter as therapy and i felt like it helped lighten my own burdens.
