The Syracuse City Arts Council’s production of Disney’s Newsies, directed by Amy Turner, is a triumph of community theater. Based on the 1994 film of the same name, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein, Newsies tells the story of the newsboys’ strike of 1899 in New York City. Led by the charismatic Jack Kelly (played with heart and determination by Porter Beesley), these young kids fight for fair wages against the greedy newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer (Andrew Stone).
The true strength of this production resides in its powerful ensemble. From the energetic number, “Carrying the Banner,” to the emotional anthem, “Once and for All,” the large cast fills the space both onstage and with their incredible vocals, impeccably directed by Kamberlynne Washburn. Beesley, as Jack is a standout. His portrayal perfectly captures the character’s bravado and vulnerability, pulling at the audience’s heartstrings as he fights for freedom and longs for a family connection, eventually finding that connection with Katherine Plummer, played by the stunning Ellie Stephenson.
But Jack isn’t alone. Les (Ty Wilson) has the audience eating out of the palm of his hand with his adorable expressions and boyish charm. Davey (Ethan Valentine) brings a different kind of charm-his velvet vocals and dapper personality make the girls swoon. The youngest actors genuinely steal the show when they come in to save the day with “Brooklyn’s Here,” especially Spon Conlon, played with an infectious energy by Emrie Chadwick.
While Stone’s portrayal of Pulitzer makes the audience want him to cave into Jack’s demands, he remains stalwart and determined, showcasing the publisher’s ruthless side. Blake Hull as Weisel is the perfect combination of intimidation and disgruntled employee, adding another layer of conflict to the narrative.
The stellar choreography by Kayley Turner and Kelsey Turner deserves special mention. Numbers like “King of New York” and “Seize the Day” are electrifying, showcasing the dancers’ athleticism and precision. The choreography isn’t just impressive; it is integral to the storytelling, seamlessly weaving movement into the narrative. This is further enhanced by Alice Remley‘s glowing light design, which bathes the stage in a dynamic wash of colors that perfectly complements the mood and energy of each scene. Sound design, also done by Remley, is often overlooked in community theater productions but is excellent in this show. Every word and musical note is clear, immersing the audience in the story entirely.
The performances aren’t the only highlight. The production team deserves credit for creating a show full of talent and heart. Camaraderie and unity emanate from the stage, a testament to the director’s vision and the cast and crew’s dedication.
Syracuse City Arts Council’s Newsies isn’t just a musical; it is an experience. It gives the audience something to believe in – the power of collective action, the importance of standing up for what’s right, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. This production is a must-see for anyone who loves a good story, stunning choreography, and a heartwarming performance. It is a reminder of the power of community theater. It showcases local talent, from seasoned performers to rising stars, and brings a beloved story to life with heart and passion.
