Salem Community Theater’s production of Little Women left me in awe from start to finish. This show had me laughing, crying, gasping, and squealing; I had goosebumps almost the entire time. I was truly stunned each time I remembered I was in Salem, Utah, and not at a Broadway performance. The cast is astonishing to watch, bringing to life the heart and soul of Louisa May Alcott‘s beloved characters. The talent in this small town is immense, and this production showcases it beautifully.

The success of this Salem’s Little Women is a testament to the hard work and vision of director Colton Simons. His thoughtful direction brings depth and nuance to every scene, creating a celebration of womanhood that feels both timeless and deeply relevant. Music director Sarah Clarke also deserves immense praise for her exceptional work. Her guidance ensures that each musical number resonates with emotion and clarity, perfectly capturing the essence of the story. Thanks to their combined efforts, I walked away with a beautiful reminder to find meaning in the small moments of life.

Jo, played by Kimberly Robbins-Muhlestein, is absolutely captivating. Her acting is spot on, and her singing voice is unbelievable. She is an absolute highlight and a total joy to watch on stage. Each of her sisters bring their unique charm to the performance: Meg (Kelsey Eastmond) feels grounding with her steady presence, Beth (Hannah Spencer) brings a bright and gentle spirit that illuminates the stage, and Amy (Gabrielle Morgan), with her youthful exuberance, provides a nostalgic reminder of growing up with a little sister. Together, they create a harmonious and compelling portrayal of the March family, making the audience laugh, cry, and connect with their journey.

The rest of the cast also deliver exceptional performances, working seamlessly together to bring this beloved story to life. Marmee (Krystal Bigler) brought everyone at my show to tears with her final solo. Her character exudes a comforting, yet encouraging presence. Laurie (Jaden Burnett) will have the audience in stitches with his quick wit and innocent spirit, adding much-needed humor and warmth to the story. Mr. Brooke (Dylan Jack) and Professor Bhaer (James Eastmond) both made me, and the row of tween girls in front of me, giddy during the romantic scenes. The child inside me swooned over each couple, relishing in the beautifully portrayed romances that add depth and delight to the overall production.

The rest of the production team also deserve high praise for their outstanding contributions. The costumes (Whitney Dawe) are stunning, capturing the essence of the period and adding a visual richness to each scene. The set design (Miranda Webster) and lighting (Zak Trotter, Josh Sorenson) are meticulously crafted and feel beautifully intentional. There are sword fights, special effects, and stunts that made my jaw drop. Each element is executed flawlessly, thanks to producer Marcus Williams and the rest of the team. They have created an immersive experience that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

This production of “Little Women” is the perfect choice for a girls’ night out, family outing, or date night. The tenderness and heart woven throughout the show make it an unforgettable experience. Everyone in my group left saying they want to come back to see it a second time. Don’t miss your opportunity to experience this “astonishing” masterpiece!
