Fans aging from 1 to 92 attended the 11th Annual Joshua Creek Christmas show last night at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo, Utah. The local band got its start about 18 years ago when lead vocalist/guitarist Jeff Hinton connected with Quint Randall (bass/vocals) and they began writing songs together. The other two band members, Ron Saltmarsh (lead guitar/vocals) and James Hollister (drums/percussion) were recruited a few years later.

The band opened with the popular Christmas songs “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and “Let It Snow.” It was easy to see these were experienced performers—their performance was so  relaxed as they created their music together. The next number, “Santa-Do List” had a fun video that appealed to kids and grownups alike and showed a Santa made out of Legos so busy preparing for Christmas that eventually his Lego pieces came apart and he needed help being put back together.

True to their reputation, Joshua Creek Christmasincluded many songs about their faith and their families. They told personal stories through their music and many in the audience were touched. They balanced the spiritual with the fun songs, and perhaps the song eliciting the most laughs from the audience was “Run, Run, Rudolph,” as it included hilarious family Christmas photos as the backdrop on the projector. Another fun number was “Hangin’ ’Round the Mistletoe,” where bunches of mistletoe were handed out for the audience to use and then pass along throughout the song.

My personal favorite was a solo guitar piece played by Saltmarsh: his arrangement of “White Christmas.” There was no soundtrack to distract from his skill as a musician and the audience listened in focused attention. The band also played a few songs from their new album, Redemption’s Road, which came out earlier this year.

Those interested in seeing  A Joshua Creek Christmas should take advantage of attending their last two Christmas shows listed on their webpage and support a local Utah band.
