Alternative/pop artist morgxn is going on tour—and starting in Utah. He will perform on Monday, September 9, at the Kilby Court in Salt Lake City, Utah. However, before jumping into his Fall 2019 Tour, Front Row Reviewers asked morgxn to answer a few questions regarding how he became a successful musician, and how his music helps him to express emotions in hard times.
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your tour? Why start in Utah of all places?
A: I’ve toured a lot, and there’s no place like Salt Lake City. The energy of the concerts with these people are wild, and I love that energy. The first time I played there was at Kilby Court, and I didn’t know what to expect, but I had a great time. That night, my song “Love You With The Lights On” turned one year old, and everyone at the concert sang “Happy Birthday” to it. I’d never seen that done before, but I think that everyone should celebrate songs that mean a lot to them.
Q: What does the “x” mean in “morgxn”?
A: When I was starting to put out music, that had me feel like my name was something that was given to you; growing up, I was always made fun of for my name. I’ve always been an avid journal writer. When I was younger, I wrote “morgxn” on a page. I got to own that part of my identity by changing that “a” to an “x”. Another reason I’ve kept the “x” is because the letter continually evolves. We’re all trying to find new ways to move forward, and the “x” creates a conversation.
Q: Why did you move from Nashville to LA?
A: The reason I left home was to find myself. I sold everything I owned and moved. I believe that outside of your comfort zone is where the magic happens and it’s important to experience life from other points of view. My song “Carry the Weight” is about standing your ground when the world shits on you every day. I grew up in a time where my dad wasn’t the person to openly cry until later in his life. There was a time when I felt scared to share these pieces of myself and felt afraid, but now that I have, I have more genuine connections with people because I shared what was real.
A: If you ask my mom, I’ve been singing since before I could talk. I would sing so loud that it would annoy my brother. My mom decided that she needed someplace to go because I was so loud. So I started a children’s choir when I was 6. I was the only Jewish kid in this Christian choir, but I was always the outsider so it worked for me.
Q: How/when did you start playing music?
A: In College I majored in Theatre and put music on the backburner. Eventually I came back and started making music again with my friend/producer who introduced me to my record label.
Q: Who are your inspirations as an artist?
A: At the moment, Patty Smith, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder come to mind. I am inspired by any people who are making music but also speaking about issues in their life and the world.
Q: What is your favorite nail polish color?
A: Oh my god! Right now, I really like my holographic nails.
