At Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, the Utah Symphony is performing An Evening in Spain with Bolero & Carmen. Going to the symphony you always get such amazing quality music that is like a sanctuary from all the chaos going on around outside. To describe it in one word—blissful. This is more of a formal event as well. The performance is conducted by Jun Markl, and he has the entire music score for the performance memorized, which is astounding when you consider all the moving pieces to every song.
The first song of the night is called “Espana”, which was written by Chabrier. This song is very light-hearted and will leave you on the edge of your seat in anticipation for the rest of the performance. Before the symphony performs the second song, they bring out a gorgeous grand piano for guest artist Ingrid Fliter to play. Fliter does an incredible piano performance, she plays extremely fast on difficult songs with such precision and still manages to put so much feeling and emotion into every note. When they start playing movement one of “Nights in the Gardens of Spain” by Falla, you instantly can imagine that you’ve just woken up in Spain and you are headed to go sightseeing in the Gardens of the Generalife. During “Selections from Carmen” by Bizet, arranged by Fritz Hoffman, you will likely recognize the songs “Les Toreadors” and “Habanera”. In the song “Habanera”, it makes you feel like dancing a slow tango. Each song from the “Selections from Carmen” are so different from the last, yet right from the start of every song there is already so much feeling and emotion being played. The song “Capricco Espagnol”, written by Rimsky-Korsakov, has so many intricate moving parts throughout the entire piece that the symphony executes exquisitely, including all the dynamics and timing, while also blending the instrumentation so no one stood out. During this song, it was the most esthetically pleasing to watch the violin bows go up and down in sync at the same height. It was in fact quite relaxing. The last song of the night that they performed was “Bolero” by Ravel, is so calm and is a perfect ending to a perfect performance. The harmonies and melodic tone qualities are so soothing that you will wish you could listen to it forever.
Music Director Thierry Fischer has once again chosen so many breathtaking songs for the Utah Symphony to perform. This is his ninth year as the Music Director for the symphony, with many more years to come. His choice in music is exquisite and every symphony performance demonstrates that. Fischer has helped keep the Utah Symphony a gem in this community.
With the impeccable quality of the music, you won’t be able to find a performance like An Evening in Spain with Bolero and Carmen on YouTube. So go outside, get some fresh air (maybe see some lights here in Salt Lake?), then come to the Utah Symphony. You won’t be disappointed. The entire performance is so beautiful and emotional, it will surely give you goosebumps.
