The Utah Symphony’s Bach Brandenburg Concerto 3 & 4 concert at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City is a perfect night at the symphony. Led by conductor Thierry Fischer, the concert consists of five pieces, each with multiple movements and is centered around the Bach Brandenburg Concertos. Each piece was chosen for both its similarity and contrast to the Brandenburg Concertos and makes for a concert experience that any symphony fan will adore.

The concert begins with the third movement of the Brandenburg Concertos and is everything you could want in a performance of this piece. The small performance ensemble, essential to the piece, is led by violinist Madeline Adkins. The third movement is followed by a Boulez piece titled Memoriale and features an incredibly talented flautist who is not listed in the program. The first half of the concert concludes with a beautiful playing of the fourth movement of the Brandenburg concertos.

For me, the true highlight of the night was Sibelius’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D minor, Op. 47, featuring special guest violinist Baiba Skride. Skride was an absolute vision in a red ballgown, though it was hard to see anything other than her incredible violin playing. Her violin is an extension of herself, each careful bow stroke fluctuates in relation to her breath. Each portion of the piece was played so well that I had goosebumps from beginning to end.

The concert concludes with a familiar assortment of selections from Peer Gynt by Grieg. From the beautiful and sweet Ingrid’s Lament to the chaotic and exciting Stormy, audience members were grinning from ear to ear and unintentionally moving to the music. Earning a standing ovation, this concert is a perfect night out for symphony lovers.
