George Frederic Handel is the quintessential Baroque composer, and his oratorio The Messiah is no different. It tells the story of Jesus Christ, from birth to resurrection, with both arias and fun choir pieces, most famously the “Hallelujah Chorus.” Many consider it a holiday classic, including the Utah Symphony, who host the two-night Messiah Sing-In every year. Even if you do not consider yourself religious, you will find yourself enjoying singing along in a multi-thousand-person choir with help from the Westminster Community Chorus and listening to the talented soloists.Soprano Grace Kahl, mezzo-soprano Melanie Ashkar, tenor Christopher Oglesby, and baritone Jesus Vicente Murillo all have authentically operatic voices, but enough clarity to understand the meaningful words in their arias. Despite Handel’s compositions being very generic baroque music (and therefore most pieces sound quite similar), each soloist brings uniqueness and artistry to their pieces.
Conductor Conner Gray Covington creates wonderful unity between the audience, choir, and orchestra without saying a single word, which I find to be a notable talent. The best part about the performance is the fact that it is a singalong. They sell paper scores at the concert hall if you do not have one, but I found it for free online and used my phone (because the music is so old it is in the public domain and therefore legal to download for free online). There are people who know the whole oratorio by heart, and there are people, like my husband and I, who were sight reading most of it. The people in our big choir included tiny children up to elderly people, singers and non-singers. Nonetheless, no matter how well you know the music or know how to read music, and no matter how musical you consider yourself, the feeling of comraderie of a 3,000-person choir cannot be beat. Bring the kids, bring grandma, and bring your entire church congregation, because this Sunday, November 25th at 7:30 PM, is your last chance this year to experience the Messiah Sing-In; don’t miss it.
