New Horizons Theatre Company’s  production of Chronicle at Midvale Performing Arts Center is a spooky way to end your Halloween season of costume dress ups, candy consumption, and corn mazes and spook houses.  At first, I was reluctant to attend the show on my own, but I ended up enjoying it more because I did.  As I walked in, the entire room was total blackness except for the exit signs. Then, after a few moments, the story began.

Chronicle, written by Tanner David Tate, takes place at The Third Bridge in Colorado, a place where a group of college students end up after getting lost in the woods in the middle of the night. At this bridge, they decide to tell a series of scary stories around a dimly lit lamp. These stories are all based on real occurrences, including the Pedro Mountain Little People, Drums on the Third Bridge, Rathdrum Witches, The Rake, The Black-Eyed Children, and The Wendigo.  Each story gradually becomes more and more terrifying and intense as the show goes on.

The entire show is done with no stage lights except for an occasional flashlight or lantern.  They use shadows for dramatic effects, with the actors traveling all around the room, so you’re never sure whether there’s something creeping up behind you And, there usually is. Watch your back.

Co-Directors McKenzie Maag, JD Tolley, and Savannah Harman do a great job doubling as actors.  The Unnamed Storytellers rarely stutter over a line, and the dialogue flows smoothly and effectively throughout the show.

My favorite part was when an old lady screamed because one of the actors snuck up on her. (The actors don’t touch you—they just breathe really heavily near you and since you’re in the dark—it’s scary!) The whole experience of New Horizons Theatre Company’s Chronicle felt a little telling spooky stories  when you go camping but with a lamp instead of a campfire. No, there were no s’mores, but no bugs, either.

New Horizons Theatre Company’s production of Chronicle is a great way to set your Halloween mood. It might even give you a few nightmares.
