Beverly’s Terrace Plaza Playhouse has once again managed to bring mystery, comedy, and romance onto the stage in one spectacular production of Curtains, based on the Peter Stone book. This romp of a show has been gaining popularity since it was first produced in 2006, in Los Angeles, California.

As the show opens, it closes. The onstage production gives a glimpse of backstage antics as the show within the show comes to a crashing halt, when tragedy strikes the leading lady. How will the production team, including producer, Carmen Bernstein (Lindy Page), and songwriters, Georgia Hendricks (Megan Cash) and Aaron Fox (Brady Cash), ever get their new, Broadway-bound show out of this predicament? Why, the dashing, unassuming hero, of course. Lt. Frank Cioffi (Brett Johnson) is on the case!

Johnson lends and innocence to the role of the surly detective. As he investigates the mystery, he soon realizes where his true passion lies: the theatre, not to mention the beautiful understudy, Niki Harris, played by Sarah Johnson. Both Johnsons lend their magnificent voices to the intriguing harmonies throughout the show in songs like “Wide Open Spaces” and “A Tough Act to Follow.”

Music director Holly Lowell hit the jackpot in talent when she was lucky enough to direct Page’s incredible voice. Her harmonies in the upbeat, toe-tapping number, “What Kind of Man?” were impeccable. Lowell also brought out the heart-breaking emotion in the number “I Miss the Music,” beautifully sung by B. Cash.

Directors Breanne Hendricks and W. Derek Hendricks assembled a magnificent team to put on this entertaining production. Choreographer Ginny Spencer brought energy and excitement to the stage with her energetic, engaging dance numbers. Costume designers Stephanie Petersen, Jim Tatton, and Jamila Lowe brilliantly captured the personalities of each character through their costumes. The Hendricks also designed a delightful set which captured an inside look of how backstage works during a production.

Technical director DD Lynch, and lighting designer Don Wilhelm do a wonderful job bringing the stage within the stage to life. The lighting and sound in this space is better than one might expect for a small space.
