Tonight, I had the opportunity to go to Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra’s Halloween concert at Timberline Middle School, and while I am usually not a fan of orchestral music and concerts, I had a really good time at the performance. Their theme for this year’s Halloween concert is Princesses and Superheroes including iconic music from Superman, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Batman, and The Incredibles. The director of the group is John Pew and he, along with the board members, has created a can’t miss Halloween event.
The evening begins with an instrument petting zoo presented by Summerhays Music, allowing audience members to see and touch instruments that they will see in the performance before it begins. I think this is such a great opportunity for children who might be coming to this performance as their first experience with music and these instruments. It is such a fun idea!
Once the concert begins it becomes obvious that this is not your average symphony performance. All of the members of the group are wearing costumes, and everyone is there for a simply good time. Audience members are welcome, and encouraged, to wear costumes as well, and they can show these costumes off in the costume parade during one of the songs. Pew does a wonderful job directing the group, and for this concert is joined by a few special guest directors. You’ll just have to come see the concert to find out who the special guests are. After the concert, kids under the age of 12 who are in costume are invited to go trick or treating down one of the halls in the middle school.
I had so much fun at this concert and I wish that I had chosen to wear a costume. This really is such a wholesome family friendly activity to do on Halloween weekend. They only have two more performances, so don’t miss your chance to see Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra’s Halloween “Princesses and Superheroes” concert!
