Sugar Factory Playhouse has struck gold with their production of Frankenstein, currently playing in West Jordan. This horror classic, adapted for the stage by Mark Scharf, is great kickoff to the Halloween season and features all the best things about community theater. Ironically located next to a cemetery, Pioneer Hall creates the perfect intimate venue for this show. The old building really sets the tone for this macabre tale.
Led by Marc Reading as Dr. Frankenstein, this talented cast will transport you to another time. Reading’s powerful performance has audience members audibly gasping and holding their breath in excitement. I swear I could hear a pin drop. But it wouldn’t be Frankenstein without the monster. The creature, played by Adam Cannon, is a chilling and human portrayal of the character. Complimented by Reading’s eccentrics, the two create a dueling chemistry that fuels the existential conflict of the story. The ensemble is versatile, most actors playing multiple parts and creates the setting of the show through dynamic pacing and staging.
Directors the Brothers Green make great use of the space through strategic minimalistic sets and projected shadow casting. The set, designed by Bri Bedore, Laura Bedore, and Mary Mason creates height levels and allows the actors to be closer to the audience. The scene set up is integrated and well-paced. The sound and light design by Robbie Dalley caused the woman in front of me to leap up in her seat out of fright, which I though was a clear sign of a well-done horror production.
Though this story is familiar, it is a great Halloween option to get you ready to scare and be scared. You’d be a monster to miss Sugar Factory Playhouse’s Frankenstein.
