“Did you really think you would come to a show called Do You Want to See Me Naked and not hear a woman talk about her menstrual cycle?” Perhaps my expectations were a bit different for this fundraiser performance produced by the Sackerson Theatre Company and performed in a space donated by the Wasatch Theatre Company in its new location at The Gateway in Salt Lake City, Utah, but I wasn’t disappointed. Do You Want to See Me Naked is a stunning and funny romp through the real life of an “overweight ex-Mormon woman.”
As the show begins, the violinist Ysa Pit takes her place on the stage, and the solemn, moving soundtrack of her solo violin starts, governing and guiding our emotional journey through the show with mastery and without intruding. Elizabeth Golden appears shortly after, and the humor and awkward revelatory theme of the show strikes us immediately. Golden is a fat woman who has come to show us that she isn’t ashamed of her body or her beliefs, and she will do so just as soon as she stops freaking out about everyone staring at her.
Golden performs the piece, written and directed by Morag Shepherd, with blatant honesty and sensuality. It is her story, and there is no question throughout that the fluctuations of feeling, desire, and sarcasm are all rooted in reality.
Do You Want to See Me Naked is not a typical story that you can label as drama, comedy, or even tragedy. The audience stands as voyeurs into the life of Golden, both connecting with her deeply and feeling shocked at what is being revealed. You will find yourself wanting to embrace her, and you will also find yourself hoping that she doesn’t keep exposing things that you’ve been comfortably hiding within yourself.
Do You Want to See Me Naked is appropriate for 18+ audiences due to language and sexual subject matter. Some may find the treatment of the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to be inaccurate and offensive.
This show is a great date night if you’re up for cutting humor and meaty subject matter, or if you just want to support a local theater company as they seek to take their show to New York City’s United Solo Festival.
