In When I Grow Up, two women explore different themes and ideas of childhood in solo dance and dialogue performances. Each piece is set to music of the dancers’ choosing with dialogue written by the dancers themselves.
The first, entitled Girl Messages, is composed and performed by Amanda MacDonald. The themes she expounds upon are personal autonomy and the ability to form personal boundaries at a young age. MacDonald’s use of familiar music such as “Children Will Listen” from Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods drove her analogy forward. She also utilizes recordings of children extemporaneously speaking on the topic of the word “no”: when to use it, when to trust adults, and when to trust themselves. It was my favorite element of the show, as setting dance to the wisdom of children is certainly creative.
The next segment by Sara Yanney is entitled When I Grow Up. Childhood dreams are detailed by a recording by Mattie Blair MacDonald, who plays the young Sara. She dreams that she will become an Olympic swimmer and a ballerina and that the Chicago Cubs will win the world series. The dance and dialogue describe a lifetime of yearning and the feeling of triumph when the Cubs finally win after 108 years of failure.
The tone of this show is a sweet one, and it is a palatable performance for all ages.
