Triple Threat, a three-part show of dance, acrobatics, and gymnastic power, heats up the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival in a fun, family-friendly surprise. Linnea Horvath, Madison Stephenson, and Charlotte Wang combine to drive an energetic and all-too-short set of dances that leave audiences and dancers breathless and wanting more. Created by Horvath to experiment with the fusion of multiple techniques and to inspire, Triple Threat delivers on all counts.
Set against a spare stage, the opening movement incorporates all three dancers, who, clad in white with flowing skirts, nod to the river sirens in the Coen Brothers movie, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Intertwined limbs yield to solo counterpoint, all set to “Bottom of The River,” by Delta Rae. Next up, after a short costume change, is Stephenson with her modern interpretation, deftly incorporating classical ballet lines into modern frenetic port de bras and spirals. Following on immediately is Wang’s expressive turn, which showcases her tumbling skills equally with more modern hip-hop styling. Wang’s face is by turns expressive and blank, adding to the dramatic tension. The triad rounds out with Horvath prowling like a stalking animal, exploring the darker corners of the stage, but focusing her energy on her tight, sinewy movement.
The trio opens the second set with the stomping beat of “River” by Bishop Briggs, a perfect offset to the high energy costume choices. Splitting to solo work again, each dancer shows off strength and purpose of movement, before melding together for the finale as a tightly integrated unit. The sweat and hard work these three convey with grace and personal style make Triple Threat a triple treat. Family friendly and exhilarating, Triple Threat brings three times the wow factor.
