The Every Woman Theatre Company, as part of The Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival, is a group of artists committed to producing work written by and starring female artists. Return to Roswell tells the story of three sisters who gather for a bachelorette party and end up airing their beefs, bonding, and exploring the idea of their own mortality in the setting of Roswell, New Mexico, as the eldest sister Talitha (Page Petrucka) is a UFO enthusiast, much to the chagrin of the youngest sister Mira (Emma Faye), an engineer who works in the field of astrophysics. The middle sister Gemma (Erin Smith) acts as the consummate peacemaker, drawing her sisters together with gentle humor and an open heart. The strife and humor between the sisters is very real and relatable, delivering a sweet and touching story that resonates and delights.

As the first show I saw at Fringe, I was charmed by these three characters and their relation to each other. I come from a family of three sisters and found some wonderful similarities to my own family dynamic that makes the characters warm and real and alive. The script has a breezy, effortless tone to it, allowing the characters to speak honestly and naturally. Comedy comes from a natural and organic place, and the tension mounts and relaxes with easy grace. There is something very relaxing and homespun about the whole thing.

Petrucka, along with playing Talitha, is also the playwright of this piece. My favorite thing about The Fringe Festival is seeing all the ideas that live in people’s minds being realized in the flesh. Petrucka’s script is funny, heartfelt, and enchanting, dwelling in a space of life and existentialism that any and all can see themselves in. The message of the importance of familial relationships is offered up with amiable affability and earnestness.

The Every Woman Theatre Company presents Return to Roswell by Page Petrucka.
