I try to get to Disneyland as often as I can. So much so my family and friends say I am addicted and a Disney nerd. If the shoe fits, wear it. And I do proudly. I even go to the mall just to walk through the Disney Store to collect a sprinkle of magic pixie dust.
So, when the chance came to get another Disney fix, I procured my ticket. I even brought the family along. The trek up the hill to a good viewing spot was well worth it and needed exercise. Our seats were such that we could see the screen and the symphony. I don’t think there was a bad seat in the house. The is a beautiful setting and once the sun went down, the temperature dropped to make the evening very comfortable.
Under the direction of conductor Jerry Steichen, several of Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoons were shown on big screens while the musical score was played live by the Utah Symphony. If you have never had this kind of experience, you need to. It is amazing watching the percussion section perform all the sound effects, including vocals. That, in and of itself, was hilarious. My favorite Silly Symphony was the “Skeleton Dance”. The flood of childhood memories washed over me. The symphonies were interspersed with commentary by conductor Steichen and clips of Walt Disney himself explaining the background behind the making of each symphony. There is something about Walt’s voice that puts me at ease and comforts my soul.
