Avast mateys and get ready for the excitement of a lifetime with the Utah Symphony and Utah Opera in Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City as part of the Film in Concert Series.  This was my first time going to a film in concert so I figured I would give a brief explanation for those who might not know what it is. The audience actually watches the film on a big screen while the symphony plays the score live. The result is unreal.

I want to start this review by being completely honest and admitting that I’m extremely biased when it comes to Pirates of the Caribbean. I absolutely adore the movies with The Curse of the Black Pearl being my all-time favorite, so I was excited for the opportunity to review this performance. As a fan of the movies, I have always been enthralled in the incredible music of Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer, but even I was not prepared of the experience of hearing that music played live. Conductor Conner Gray Covington leads the symphony and an eleven-piece men’s choir from the Utah Opera from the 143 minute film with such ease and precision. Not one cue is missed, not one note is faltered, and the symphony itself shines with grace and talent. It is truly breath taking to the point that I sometimes lost myself in the music and forgot about the actual movie playing. Another thing that opened my eyes was just how much the symphony and choir had to perform. There were very rare moments when there was no music playing, though the entire performance leads up to the end credits when the symphony really gets to shine as they played without the film in background. This really draws the audience to their feet at the end.

I did not think the movie could get better than it was in theatres, but I could not have been more wrong. The skill of the symphony and the incredible venue at Abravenal Hall truly made the film an experience. There is only one performance left tonight and it is selling out quickly, I would really recommend everyone to go. I am also completely hooked with the Film in Concert series. The symphony will be performing Ghostbusters and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at Abravanel Hall and Jurassic Park at Usana Amphitheatre later this year. I will definitely be in the audience.
