The Cirque Italia Silver Troupe is amazing. I had the opportunity last Saturday to see them in Provo, Utah by the Provo Mall. While it was the first time that I have personally attended one of their performances, they have actually been performing worldwide since 2012. Director Manuel Rebecci, is from Italy, and has a long family history of involvement in the circus. Along with him are more than 30 performers, many of whom come from different countries. A few of the countries represented in the circus are Italy, USA, Peru, Mexico, Hungary, and Brazil, to name a few.
I had never seen a circus performance before, so I was genuinely excited when I drove past the Provo Mall and saw them setting up the big white tent. I went expecting something out of Disney’s Dumbo, and got a show worthy of America’s Got Talent.
The show starts with a friendly welcoming over the speakers to the audience. The lights dim, and music starts to play. A man steps onstage. The music stops and the man welcomes everyone to the circus. At first the thought is that he must be the ringmaster, however, it is soon made apparent by his interaction with the audience and the games that he begins to involve select members in, that he is not the ringmaster, but the clown. In fact, he is the only clown in the entire show, and they really don’t need more than him as he does a smashing job at getting the audience involved. After a bit of fun, smoke machines burst to life and the music picks up again. Another man enters the stage singing along in strong, beautiful Italian in a voice that could compete with Paul Potts or Josh Groban. After the song he welcomes everyone to the show, and then the magic begins.
Every act is spectacular and they have quite a few that I was not expecting to see in a traveling circus. The first act, for example, is a costume quick change performed by a Hungarian gentleman and his beautiful Brazilian assistant. I had seen an act like this before on America’s Got Talent, and I have always wanted to see it done live. It is very good. A few of the other unexpected acts are performed by this same couple. They do some amazing bicycle stunts, and some crazy roller skating acrobatics that at times make you scared to watch, but unable to look away.
And they aren’t the only ones that make you feel like you need to hold your breath. The tightrope walkers, contortionist, and the daredevil all have moments that have you wringing your hands in worry and wishing they would come down, but at the same time knowing deep inside that you don’t want them to. You want them to keep going. Because watching them traipsing around 20 feet in the air, defying gravity and death, is exhilarating.

But not to worry, not all the acts have you clenching the sides of your seat in white-knuckled grip. Others, like the juggling act, have you perched on the edge of your chair as you try to follow the blur of the batons, rings, and hats that are flying about in the air above his head. The juggler himself is from Mexico, and has smooth, rhythmic movements that almost look like he is dancing while he juggles.
Other acts include beautiful acrobatics in the air, and the same singer as before perfoming another Italian song while doing balancing tricks on his hands. And throughout the whole thing, in between the different acts, the clown is constantly keeping the audience’s energy high with some good laughs and well-timed participation. The stage itself is noteworthy as well, as the Cirque Italia is a “water circus” and has a custom designed stage that can hold over 35,000 gallons of water. This is used to not only make a stunning image with the many fountains that spray the water into the air, but the gentle noise of the fountains also has a calming effect on the audience.
The only thing that was a struggle during the entire show was that the clown’s microphone did not pick his voice up very clearly, and since he spoke with an Italian accent, it was slightly difficult to understand him. However, it wasn’t really necessary to understand his words, as he made it very clear through his actions what it was that he was trying to portray and get the audience to do.
The Cirque Italia Silver Troupe was one of the best performances that I have ever been to, and I would gladly go again if the opportunity presented itself. I would rate the show as being a hit for all ages. My parents, who are in their mid-50s enjoyed it as much as I did, and the many children scattered throughout the audience loved it as well. And while sadly it has already left from Provo, they are currently setting up again in Salt Lake, so there is still a chance to see them. They will be in Salt Lake performing for the next two weekends from Thursday June 21st through Sunday June 24th and again from Thursday June 28th through Sunday July 1st. You can buy tickets here.
Tickets range in price from $20-40 for adults and $10-35 for children depending on where you sit. I sat on the second to last row for $20, and felt like I still had amazing seat. The picture on the website where you buy your tickets makes it look really far away, but any seat in the house is a good one. As well, if you want to buy some of the fun treats, or other souvenirs that they have there it is important to know that they only accept cash in the tent. No cards or checks. Tickets are available online or at the ticket booth. And while they might seem a little pricey, this isn’t a circus that you want to miss. So grab a friend, dump out that jar of pennies that you have been saving, and go have a fun time at the big top.
