Broadway Across America’s latest production, Jersey Boys, at the Eccles in Salt Lake is a must go to but has a somewhat short run. So quickly read this review and then get online and get your tickets.
I grew up with some of the later Four Seasons‘ work, but the original music is a little before my time (though not my husband’s) though I do remember most of what is in Jersey Boys from listening to oldies radio stations and hearing many of the songs in movies, commercials, and so forth. So Jersey Boys is a fun history lesson on how the worldwide sensation foursome The Four Seasons and its lead singer, Frankie Valli (Provo, Utah native Aaron De Jesus), rose to fame. This is not your typical jukebox musical (like Mamma Mia) where music is taken and you pattern a musical and story line around a bunch of random songs. This is a story with the music of the Four Seasons interspersed all through it so we see the incredible rise to fame for these four men and others.
A short synopsis of Jersey Boys–I don’t want to give too much away because their story is really incredible and you need to see it as it plays out onstage. But it is a highly entertaining, unusual rags-to-riches story built on the talent, chutzpah, and bond of four men: baritone vocalist/lead guitarist Tommy DeVito (Corey Greenan), songwriter/keyboardist/backing vocalist Bob Gaudio (Tommaso Antico), and bass singer/bass guitarist Nick Massi (Chris Stevens). There are lots of great bits in the story and the songs–oh my goodness, the songs! These four men and the rest of the cast harmonize brilliantly, thanks to Music Director Michael Gonzales. The dancing (Choreographer Sergio Trujillo) in that great 60’s foursome coordination is so enjoyable. The downside to all that dancing is it was really hard to not just get up and mimic the dancing in the aisles of the Eccles Theater.
Costumes by Jess Goldstein, set by Klara Zieglerova, wig and hair design by Charles G. LaPointe, Lighting by Howell Binkley, Sound by Steve Canyon Kennedy create an incredibly believable, authentic look. We especially liked the huge cartoons broadcast above the set that add a touch of fun, kitsch, and enhanced story-telling.
The Four Seasons were a bunch of, to put it kindly, rough necks with incredible musical talent. As soon as I got out of the show while I waiting for Trax to come, I started Googling and was and am amazed at the fantastic story of these four men. Later, the band breaks up and other back-up singers are added and Valli becomes the headliner in Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and again, the harmonies and synergy onstage is incredible.
We sat next to a woman and her mother who have seen Jersey Boys many times (the mother five times and the daughter three times!) and they said this tour production is so very well executed. They added that Antico as Gaudio is the best they’ve seen. This alone tells me that I need to demand you come see Jersey Boys at the Eccles.
Because Jersey Boys has been on Broadway and because the touring production has been going for awhile, this production is especially tight. In fact, in speaking with the marketing folks at the Eccles, I was told the actors arrived in Salt Lake City (from playing in Boise on Thursday night) at 4:00 PM and then pulled off an incredible, flawless, energy-filled, fantastic performance. This is professionalism. This is excellence. And this is worth it!

Note: this show is a good 2 1/2 hours long and starting at 8:00 PM may make youngsters stay up a bit late. And F-words are prolific in this show, as well as one scene that has some mild sexual stuff that might make some younger kids (and/or their parents) a little uncomfortable. However, if you give your tweens and teens a heads up about this, I actually recommend this show for many reasons. The Four Seasons were not your squeaky clean group of young men. They were tough and had some real hardships. They made poor choices throughout their lives, not just as teenagers, and the lessons that can be learned from Jersey Boys are valuable.
Jersey Boys is fun, filled with talent, energy, and super music and shouldn’t be missed.
