If you’ve never been to Havana, St. George Musical Theater’s Guys and Dolls may be your ticket there. Okay, maybe this is a bit of an inside joke for those that are already familiar with Guys and Dolls. But I can bet (see what I did there?) you’ll still feel like you’ve been swept off your feet. You may even be tempted to drive out to Nevada to “shoot some craps!” Maybe you’ll also want to buy some white-on-black oxfords and always carry a lucky pair of dice. Have you been engaged for fourteen years? Does your fiancée have a cold? Then, honey, you two come see this show. You probably need to.
I always love going to see productions put on by SGMT because I’m reminded about the reasons I love theatre. Something about the energy there makes me feel like going up onstage myself and being part of the cast, and what a cast makes up Guys and Dolls. Brava! Nathan Detroit (Abe Hegewald*) is secretly hosting a crap game, much to the disdain of his fiancée Adelaide (Sammy Myrick), a hot-box dancer. Nathan needs money to rent a venue for the game, so he bets Sky Masterson (Greg Knell) that he can’t take Missionary Sarah Brown (Danica Christensen on a date to Havana. The events that follow are hilarious, romantic, and wholesome.
I absolutely love the dynamics of each character and the cast’s portrayals of them, like Harry the Horse (Brennan Walters) who trots around, whinnies, and neighs at comedic intervals. Big Jule (John Blasko) does well at being intimidating, especially when he’s out some money. The Mission’s General Matilda (Jane Williams) is also quite intimidating, however, it’s very fun watching her get fluttered by Sky’s mannerisms. Nicely-Nicely, Benny, and Rusty (BJ Cox, Austin Jackson, Ryan Olsen) are like the three amigos, and they are each hilarious and bring their own spunk to the show. Arvide Abernathy (Steve Campbell) is the ultimate dad: funny, smart, and protective. I loved his scenes with Sarah. The same goes for each and every character, Angie the Ox (Asher Garner), Agatha (Caitlyn Kay Mickelson), Calvin (Nils Lingwall), Martha (Mary Jayne Pike), Sadie-Rai Jensen, Brannigan (Nathan Merrill), Liver Lips Louie (Riley Bradbury), Mimi (Ashlie Davenport), and Makayla Nelson. What a wonderful group, and yet another swell performance at the Historic St. George Opera House.
Directed by Kyle Myrick (he’s the Sound Designer as well), in his director’s notes he mentions that he hopes that the show will take us back to a simpler time in history and help us escape the dreariness of the real world. I believe it accomplishes that and more.
The rest of the production staff includes Dan Olsen as the Producer, great job getting everything assembled and ready for us. Norm Lister is the Music Director, who creates a group of singers who perform wonderfully. Alexis Nielson is the Choreographer, and her work with the dance scenes, such as “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” are fantastic. Myrick is also the Costume Designer, and they are wonderful! What talent! Jennifer Roberts is the Lighting Designer; I loved the idea of the stage going dark subtly yet quickly for fast scene changes like the scenes in Havana, which helped it along for the hilarious drunk Sarah scene. Shaun Labrecque is the projection designer, which is 80% of the set design in this show. Everything looked so authentic, even with few props, due to the realistic projections. Grace Wells is the mic tech, and I’m happy to say that there were no issues that I noticed with the mics! Everything went so smoothly.
St. George Musical Theater’s Guys and Dolls is a fantastic show for the entire family, plus The Sweet Tooth Fairy caters during intermission. Bring someone and have fun at a show that will have you laughing and singing along.
