The Off Broadway Theater is known for great comedy, and Jurassic Park City is no exception. Jurassic Park City is exactly what it sounds like–a woman (Angela Hope Hartman as Ms. Hamblin) finds an expensive fossil and uses the wealth she earns from it to start a Jurassic Park in Park City, Utah. Clueless paleontologists Dr. Thatcher (Mariah Bowles), Dr. Graham (Scott MacDonald), and Dr. Malakai (Sebastian Smith) come to visit the park when everything goes wrong at the hands of Robert Redford. Yes, THE Robert Redford… though he’s played byOBT owner Eric Jensen. Sorry, there’s no Academy Award nominated actor in this show, but Jensen will constantly remind you of the greatness of Robert Redford so it feels like he’s there. Kind of.
Each of these characters has their own quirk, which those playing them embrace fully under the direction of Jensen and Ryan Parker. Dr. Graham has the job of caring for Ms. Hamblin’s children, though he constantly mentions how he thinks having children is a terrible idea. Dr. Malakai and Dr. Thatcher have an awkward “relationship,” established through the constant annoying trifling by Dr. Malakai and pushing away by Dr. Thatcher. My favorite characters, however, are all the ensemble characters played by Chris Harvey, Becky Collins, Jessica Stevens, and Kristina Wilson–and who can forget the ferocious yet lovable Velociraptors, Caroline Flood and Destony Rosas? These ensemble characters really bring the show to life (and death, for some). They are absolutely hilarious, from the incredibly flamboyant “Fruit Tree,” to a surprise appearance by Barney–yes, the purple dinosaur, Barney. Not to mention, the semi-original songs (remakes of pop/rock songs with original lyrics) are humorous and witty, Velociraptor costumes are surprisingly realistic (Janice Jensen), and lighting compliments the happenings on stage quite well (Ben Tribe).
If you’ve never been to the Off Broadway Theater, don’t be confused by its name. The shows they put on are not extravagant or expensive-looking, but they embrace that fact and have it be part of the comedy. During every show, with the worst timing possible, they will shamelessly advertise and ask for donations, which I think is hilarious. If you’re looking for a boring show with an elaborate set, this isn’t the show for you. If you couldn’t care less and just want to laugh your pants off, Jurassic Park City is definitely is the show and the OBT is the theater for you. This is one of my husband and my favorite places to go, because the comedy is so dang good. Don’t forget to stop by Laughing Stock, their year-round improv comedy show, much like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00 PM. You can get discounted tickets if you see their featured show that same night. You can’t go wrong with 4-5 hours of comedy in one night.
