A Utah Theater Review by Chelsea Kennedy

If you like having fun, and you like good food, you’ll love Salty Dinner Theater!  Be prepared to be up close and personal with the cast, and possibly pulled up out of your seat!  Salty Dinner Theater has several different venues in which they perform on different nights of the week.  The venue my husband and I attended was The Old Spaghetti Factory (Orem). You can refer to their website for a venue near you.  If you plan to go reserve your tickets soon!  Many of the nights have already sold out!

When we entered The Old Spaghetti Factory we were directed to the back room where we were met by a hostess who quickly directed us to our seat.  Seated near our table was a strange man in a strait jacket, sort of mumbling to himself.  He soon joined us at our table asking me and the others at our table questions about ourselves.  We were then greeted by other members of the cast.  I really liked this part of the show.  It allowed me to get a feel for the characters before the show actually began.

The script is an original written by Daniel Brassard.  I am giving you a very watered down version, because I believe it was the actors who made this show and not necessarily the story they were telling. It begins with the narrator Renfield (Casey Wayman).  (This was the man in the strait jacket whom  we met  before the show started.)  He introduces us to Jon Harker (Jacob Barnes), a lawyer, who takes a journey to Transylvania to meet with Dracula to convince him to move to England.  After spending some time in Dracula’s castle, Harker realizes something isn’t quite right. Meanwhile Lucy Westerna(Dena Brady) and Dr. Van Helsing(Mike Brown) are having some fun at home choosing Lucy’s future husband.  Mina Murray(Sherri Gilles), Harker’s fiancé, is fretting about Harker’s well being.  The show takes a few detours and the cast involves the audience in some interactive competition and musical entertainment.  Soon a few of the cast members have been infected by Dracula!  One of the cast members (I won’t tell you who) is slain! Then  Dr. Van Helsing, Jon Harker, and Mina Murray hunt down Dracula and destroy him once and for all!

I loved Renfield played by Casey Wayman.  He was a VERY convincing crazy person.  His energy and storytelling skills were spot-on.  I also really enjoyed his vampire impersonations late in the show.

Jon Harker (Jacob Barnes) was a very likeable, delightful young man.  He also greeted us before the show began, introducing himself and giving us an idea of how he fit into the story.  His fiancé Mina Murray (Sherri Gilles) was a lovely person, I really felt like she transformed her character after being bitten by Dracula.

Dr. Van Helsing (Mike Brown) was one of my favorites!  He was very clever with his comical timing.  I felt like it wasn’t forced.  He was fully commited to his character.  Really just a lot of fun!

Probably my favorite part of the show was when Lucy Westerna (Dena Brady) convinced Dr. Van Helsing to help her “choose her suitor” game show style.  I haven’t laughed that hard in a while!

Dracula (Allen Smith) looked awesome!  I loved his costume and especially his contacts.  When he looked directly at you, you felt like he was staring into your soul.  However, I wanted more from him.  I didn’t feel like he was creepy enough.  He seemed a little too “human” if you will.

Steve/ Tina Turner/ Celene Dion (Shantell Seare) was our musical entertainment.   Dressed as a patient in an asylum she serenaded the audience during transitional moments.  She interacted with the audience and got a lot of laughs! Her singing was quite good too.

Overall I really enjoyed the show.  It was fun and interactive!  If you are the type of person who doesn’t care for being close to the actors/ actresses this may not be the show for you.  But I think the cast succeeded in creating a fun atmosphere and a great night!
