Midvale Arts Council presents Nunsense- A Musical Comedy by Dan Goggin is spot on, hilarious, musical fun with the nuns! The Little Sisters of Hoboken have gotten into quite a pickle and are depending on you to help them raise up the money to put some deceased sisters in the ground. Full of audience participation, this talented cast will keep you in stitches from start to end. While it could pose a challenge to perform a show heavily weighted with Catholic jokes in a predominantly Mormon audience, this production will have you bursting with laughter. Should you happen to have background knowledge of Catholicism like myself and my companion do it is side-splitting, but the cast does a great job of filling in any information you might need without killing the punchline, so either way you will laugh out loud.

Mandy Copier as Sister Mary Regina Reverend Mother leads her henhouse with spunky authority and fantastic banter with her counterpart Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices portrayed by Aubrey Vance. The two have developed a fun relationship, full of thinly veiled power struggle, passive-aggressive barbs, and genuine love and respect. Copier showcases her belt in Turn up the Spotlight where we see the would-be showman hidden beneath the habit. Vance brings it home with her powerhouse vocals in Holier Than Thou” a hilarious treatise to emulate the Saints. Eva TerraNova portrays a perfect, street smart and sassy Sister Robert Anne complete with high tops, sassy glasses, and lipstick. She keeps a perfect Brooklyn dialect throughout the show, including her solos. An impressive feat. Nicole Neff is hilarious as the sweet, naive novice Sister Mary Leo, an aspiring, albeit a bit clumsy, ballerina who just wants to dance. My favorite moment for her has got to be The Ballet of a Dying Nun followed closely by her duet with Sister Hubert Biggest Ain’t Always Best. April Kimball Thomas killed it with her portrayal of Sister Mary Amnesia, a great mix of dubious innocence laced with  sarcasm in So You Want to be a Nun. Full of “Oh Honey” moments, she is so darling and innocent you can’t help but root for her to regain her memory.

While there are a few songs in which some of the actors struggle to hit a true high belt, we can’t all be Kristin Chenoweth, it feels appropriate for the characters. After all, this is meant to be a production put on in  haste by a group of nuns, not Broadway’s best. This is not meant as a slight to any of the actors, but rather an honest critique. Each of the actors does fabulous solo work that perfectly matches their vocal range and their voices complement each other well in the group numbers. Music Director John Glen has brought out the finest in each of these vocalists.  Director Nolan Mitchell nails all the comedic moments with impeccable timing and an embrace of the absurd. It was utterly endearing to watch the sisters scrambling to impress the audience mixed with moments of utter honesty about how difficult it is to be “saintly” and live up to the expectations of their vocation. Choreographer Jann LeVitre plays up the fun in each of the dance numbers embodying the epitome of what “show business” looks like from a group of amateurs. Of course, the true technical talent comes out in the epic tap routine in Tackle That Temptation with a Time Step.

My companion and I were still laughing as we left the theater, and continued talking about the show long after. The production is well executed and will have you laughing right alongside the sisters as they compete for your affection and donation to save their convent. This darling, spunky, talented group will keep you in stitches. If you’re looking for a little fun, do not miss your chance to play with the nuns in Midvale Arts Council’s Nunsense.
