Midvale Main Street Theatre brings us another edgy production with Spring Awakening. I always appreciate the opportunity to review a show at MMST because they put on shows that many other theatres in the valley simply won’t. MMST has a great venue with nice comfy chairs and even an open bar.

Spring Awakening is a musical based on the play by Frank Wedekind with Book and Lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik. The story revolves around teenage sexuality and covers other strong subjects such as child abuse and suicide. During the preshow announcements there was a “viewer discretion is advised,” however I was surprised to not find the same warning in the program or a simple synopsis of the show.

The show starts with a beautiful number by Cameron Analee Aragon. Her vocals throughout the entire show were spot on. The two male leads, Leo Cody Jensen and Kenneth Starling, also stood out in their vocal performance. The three actors carry much of the show with many solos, duets, and heartfelt scenes. Starling’s presence onstage always pulls me in, and his character work and choices are always present. I loved that every moment of physical punishment his character receives is real. My heart was pounding for him during the scene his father hits him for failing school.

For a while I was confused by the director’s choice of using fake microphones. I believe that it was Cassidy Ross’s intention to help differentiate between the songs that are inner thoughts versus the songs that are in the moment for characters.  While the microphones did aid in that cause, I believe they were too distracting from the story being told.

The evening’s strongest number is “Totally Fucked.”  The vocal harmonies are clear and tight and the choreography is energetic and helped with the storyline. The choreography by Alexandria Zinov is very creative throughout the whole show. I love the way she uses all the chairs in “The Bitch of Living” and many of her modern dance movements throughout other numbers.

Spring Awakening at Midvale Main Street Theatre will tug on your heart strings. It makes you think about many subjects that are very hard for many people to discuss, but are still very real and current in today’s world. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this show.
