The terrifying woods are full of fun and laughter with the world premiere of Little Red at the SCERA Center for the Arts in Orem. Written and directed by Chase Ramsey (who also plays the Woodsman in the show) with original music and lyrics by David Paul Smith, the show brings a unique twist on the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood in a musical specially designed to introduce kids to the theatre as part of SCERA’s “Theatre for Young Audiences” department.

In a town that is so scared of the Big Bad Wolf (T.J. Thomas (first two performances)/Shawn Mortensen) living in the woods that they are about to starve, Little Red (Rilee Crump) decides she is not scared of the Wolf and will still deliver groceries to her Granny (Shannon Follette). With the help of two brothers, the Butcher (Nicolas Thomas) and Woodsman (Ramsey), Little Red learns that it is not only important to be brave but also to be cautious. The three devise a plan to lure the Wolf into Granny’s house and stop him once and for all. That is, if he doesn’t trick them all first.

One of the biggest highlights of this musical is the audience interactions. Throughout the entire show, the cast asks questions and reacts to answers in a way that is playful without ever feeling forced. This was especially fun for my five-year-old son who came to the show with me. He loved making “spooky noises” with the Wolf and yelling to help out the “good guys” (as he called them). I was a little worried going into the show that the Wolf might be represented in a way that would be scary to a younger audience, but I could not have been more wrong. Thomas steals the show as the sneaky, disguise-loving Wolf who just wants some peace and quiet. He is hilarious in every scene he is in, even when he is simply sticking out from the side of the stage holding up a direction for the audience to react.

I loved the fact that this was a small cast and that the costumes (Deborah Bowman) and set design (Mortensen) were kept minimal as well. It really gave the characters a chance to shine on their own without it being overwhelming. It also gave the original music a chance to really be showcased and it did not disappoint.  The singing (Music Director Smith) in this show was fantastic from all the characters. The song “Brave and Cautious” serves as a recurring theme throughout the musical as Little Red learns the important lesson of thinking before doing even when she is trying to be brave. My favorite song, however, was “I Could be a Hero” sung by the Butcher and the Wolf. It is a duet in which the Wolf is pretending to be a maiden lost in the woods and needs the Butcher to help her.  I am still laughing over that song.

Overall, this is the perfect musical for the whole family. The show is just over an hour and the theatre has popcorn and snacks available for purchase, as well as a viewing “cry room” in the back for the parents that need to take their kids out. It is all reserve seating and I would suggest sitting as close as possible. Come see Little Red at the SCERA and enjoy an old favorite with new twists and great laughs and a great bunch of important lessons, set to music.
