When I went to see St. George Musical Theater’s production of Willy Wonka the Musical, I was taken back to my childhood, filled with the wonder of Roald Dahl‘s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its fantastic story of candy, intrigue, good guys and not so good guys. The only thing that would have made it better was having my very own Wonka bar to enjoy. Wonka has secret plans of retiring but he wants his chocolate factory to live on. So he hides five golden tickets in selected candy bars throughout the world. The finders of said tickets get to take a tour of the factory. Little do they know this is really an interview to take over the company.
Jared Davis is remarkable in his role as Willy Wonka himself. Not only can Davis sing but his character is spot on. The Gloops are the first to find a ticket. Augustus Gloop (Trey Lawrence) and his mother Mrs. Gloop (Grace Wells) have you laughing the whole time. Next up is the daddy/ daughter duo, Mr. Salt (Dan Olsen) and Veruca Salt (Lyndsey Olsen). They are fantastic at playing the wealthy, entitled people who get whatever they want. However, they quickly learn that money doesn’t buy everything. Now we move on to Ms. Beauregard (Alisa Burnham De Avila) and her champion gum-chewing daughter Violet (Kate Ohlsen) who was warned that Mr. Wonka’s gum wasn’t ready to be eaten, yet she insisted on consuming just one little piece. Both were superb in their roles. Another duo to entertain us are the Teavee’s. Kyla Lawrence plays the doting mother of Mike (Kadence Edwards). All this boy knows is how to play video games and watch TV. And lastly we have Charlie (Eric Davis) and his grandpa Joe (John Hummel). These two are the sweetest, most humble humans around. You really just want to hug them. Their connection throughout the show is amazing.
Director Kristina Harding and stage manager Kristen Marie Mcphie do a fantastic job in utilizing the given space. Music Director Rachel Cox makes the show, creating a beautiful sound from her many capable singers. So much talent in one show! Choreographer Kayla Medina does a wonderful job as well. It can’t be easy making sure that the show is great from all angles. Set Designers Spencer Potter and Chelsea Richards successfully transformed the theater into another world. There wasn’t a whole lot to it but I loved that we were able to tap into our imaginations. Costumer Kris Davies created costumes that were exactly right for the production.
I had the pleasure of being accompanied by my two children as well as my niece. Kyron, six years old, loved that the cast was so interactive throughout the entire show. Lily, five years old, loved the Oompa Loompas because they were funny. And Miridyan, ten years old, couldn’t say her favorite part because she loved the entire show.
The theater is located in the historic Opera house and is set up with seating on all sides with the stage in the center, which gives everyone a perfect view. Willy Wonka the Musical is a real treat for all ages. The show runs about two hours with a 15 minute intermission, when you can purchase yummy goodies including delicious cake bites and cookies. Parking can be a bit of a hassle due to the small size of the lot but there is plenty of parking available on the street. We all had a wonderful evening at Willy Wonka the Musical, thanks to St. George Musical Theater. Come find the kid in you at this fun, family-friendly show.
