Debuting with an edge this fall as the new theater company on block, this time An Other Theater Company rings in Christmas with The SantaLand Diaries by David Sedaris. Crumpet the Elf embodied by the mercurial Jordan Kramer in a one-man show, this elf has some sharp elbows and observations about the nature of myth crowded into an urban department store.

The SantaLand Diaries is adapted from David Sedaris’s sly memoir relating the behind-the-scenes stresses he confronted as an Elf at Macy’sthe Macy’s in New York City. At the time, the late 80’s, Sedaris was a young writer just beginning to sharpen his sardonic quill. The piece debuted on NPR in 1992.

Darkly humorous, The SantaLand Diaries is the antidote to sugar plums, horrible arrangements of Christmas carols and Disney for starters, that you weary shoppers may be hoping for. This show is for those who feel the sweetness of Christmas souring in their bellies, and crave a stiff shot of Nog to cool their fevers.

Kramer is winningly conspiratorial, sharing the dark side of Christmas directly with us, the audience. With a knowing wink, Kramer uses an array of talented voices to puncture reality and paint for us a locker room of dissolute Santas, horny elves, and frazzled parents. Be prepared for wardrobe malfunctions and terrible tots waiting in line for Santa’s dubious blessings. Director Kacey Spadafora takes Kramer’s honed talent and together they create a holiday delight you will not find anywhere else.

Don’t wait too long to get some of this deliciously spicy refreshment all about our most popular modern myth, Santa. Only a few performances remain. This show is for adults.
