We had the wonderful opportunity to see Charles DickensA Christmas Carol at the CenterPoint Legacy Theatre on opening night, Friday, November 24th. It will be playing every day except Sunday until December 23rd, so you have plenty of opportunities to see!

The theater is small yet comfortable, seating approximately 350 people. It is quite clean and new, with an overall modern feel to it.

There are multiple versions of the A Christmas Carol musical, and the one CenterPoint Legacy Theatre chose is written by Mike Ockrent and Lynn Ahrens, with music written by Alan Menken. This particular version was performed at the Paramount Theater in New York City every year from 1994-2003.

As a whole, CenterPoint Theatre puts on incredibly professional performances, and this is no exception. Costuming (Katie Rogel), set design (Scott Van Dyke), and hair design (Hope Bird) are well-designed and appropriate for the time period of the musical. Sound design (Jay M. Clark), and lighting design (Darren Maxfield) are especially exceptional. The ghosts’ voices truly sound like ghosts, and lighting adds dramatically to the moods of each scene.

As a highly ensemble-oriented show, it would be impossible to name every talented performer. Of course, Scrooge (Chuck Gilmore) has to be mentioned! He contributes greatly to every scene, and single-handedly set the mood for each scene, whether the scene was happy, scary, sad, etc. Jacob Marley (Kim Christy) is also cast perfectly, as one can sense in the song “Link By Link,” where Christy explains the chains he is bound by at death as a result of his obscene selfishness during life. One thing to note about that song: there are “spirits” who walk through the crowd as they approach the stage—I, myself, was a bit spooked, so I definitely recommend not having children in aisle seats. Other well-cast lead roles include Bob Cratchit (Craig Williams), Tiny Tim (Jonathan Martineau), 20-Year-Old Scrooge (Colton Hattabaugh), and the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present (Zackery Western and Kyle Esposito, respectively). Both these ghosts have wonderful singing voices, and Esposito does a wonderful job adding humor to the song “Abundance and Charity,” where he comically dances alongside showgirls to show Scrooge the happiness that comes from giving. One showgirl, Chantryce Diehl, is notable simply because her smile is enticing! Despite being in an ensemble role, it is hard to take one’s eyes off her smile. Other notable non-lead roles include the three charity men/Carolers (Bryn Wanlass, Chad Wilkinson, and Carson Boss), who blend beautifully in their trio during “London Town Carol,” and Oliver DeYoung (Ollie), who is the cutest 8-month-old baby I’ve ever seen wearing 19th-century clothing.

Choreographer Jessica Merrill successfully creates engaging yet simple group dances, that include the children as well as the adults. Merrill also choreographs for the Ghost of Christmas Future (Morgan Western), who is able to dance beautifully while maintaining the creepiness of her role (the white contact lenses definitely help too).
