Utah New Works Theater Project’s second installment of their New Works Ten, where plays were produced opened tonight (Thursday.) Last night was staged readings. Out of 70 submissions, these ten plays made the cut and were given to directors who then cast the plays and began rehearsing. Given only a few weeks to rehearse, tonight’s productions are very good–some even brilliant. Each script brings something different, diverse, interesting, fun, spooky…. Well, you get the idea. Ten very different productions makes for one fun night.
My favorites of the nights were Synethesia, which stars a lovely and effective Chauntel Lopez as the blind cello player Ariel and Brian Kocherhans as her painter friend, Stephen. Both actors are brilliant, the director, Heather Oberlander makes nary a false move, and script by Kathy Reynolds is tight, moving, and lovely.
The Good Wife’s Guide by Scott M. Stringham and Heather A. Stringham is straight up hilarious. H. Stringham is the director, and she does a fabulous job. Helen, the wife, played delightfully by Julia DuBois, is so, so good. We loved this show–so many great laughs.
Unseen, They Do Not Bite is haunting, weird, interesting, and slightly spooky, but very good. The standout performance in this show is by Cathy Ostler. I’m going to be honest. I auditioned for this part, but I’m professional enough to say she performs it better than I could. Whoa. So haunting.
The Holiday Police, by Cody Cutler, who also directed it, is so fun, especially since it’s about Thanksgiving, kind of. The cast is tight, very in sync, and just goes for it. Lots of physical comedy, big movement–many, many laughs. Ryan (Adam Spencer Packard), Stacy (Kathryn Jensen), and Lindsey (Hannah Kay Siegfried) are all delightful and ended the evening with a great comedic piece.
My favorite of the night, Cassandra, by Eric Samuelsen, is all that this kind of project can generate. Brilliant writing, moving story, and excellent cast and director. Agamemnon, played by W. Benjamin Hyde, and Cassandra (Mariah Proctor) are so believable and powerful, they shine onstage. Director Michael Smith did everything right. A+ on this one.

This project plays two more nights, and you will enjoy it when you go. The Mercury Theater is neat, funky and fun, with risers (yeah!) and chairs on three sides. No bad seat in the house. At ten bucks, Utah New Works Theater Project’s New Works Ten is a worthy opportunity to enjoy and support the arts.
