Captain Louie is the SCERA’s newest Theater for Young Audiences musical. Based on the Ezra Jack Keats book The Trip, Captain Louie is a fanciful show aimed at school-age children.

Young Louie (Eric Smith) feels left out upon moving to a new neighborhood. He uses his imagination to pilot his red airplane back to his old neighborhood for one last adventure before attempting to meet the new kids in his new home on Halloween night. Smith is easy to understand and evokes the emotions of the child he is portraying. The leader in the old neighborhood is Roberta (Laura Chapman), who has fun with her accent and the physical comedy of being the ringleader. The new kid, Julio, who reflects Louie’s own fears about being new and resolves them in a sweet coming together of friends, is played charmingly by Brooke Wray. The rest of the ensemble (Kjersti Christensen as Amy, Kelli Dougal as Angie, Jacom Clarkson as Ziggy, Daisy Allred as Kid, Kaysie Norton as the cat) work well together and the group songs are lovely to hear.

The beginning of the play moves very quickly through inner thoughts, group actions, and an imagination scene reminiscent of an episode of Mister Rogers. I worried it might be slightly confusing for the young audience but my 12-year-old guest reviewer had no trouble following the story. In fact, it is now her favorite youth play.

Director/Music Director Delayne Bluth Dayton helps the entire small cast  communicate by using a great deal on exaggerated mannerisms to convey the emotions of childish characters to a very young audience. Thankfully, it is quite effective for a wide age range of children. The real star may be the airplane, a large piece that takes center stage with wings unfolding and propeller spinning as Captain Louie and his friends sing and dance. Kudos to Choreographer/Set Designer Shawn M. Mortensen. The ensemble singing is smooth and harmonious. The simple costumes (Costume Designer Kelsey Seaver) are colorful and evocative of the characters. After the show, children are encouraged to meet the cast and take pictures in front of a small replica of the Captain Louie’s red airplane. Evening performances and school matinees are offered. The play runs one hour and the matinees include a 15-minute Q&A session after the play concludes.

The SCERA’s Captain Louie is fun for all, so fly over to this fun musical and bring the littles!
