Midvale Main Street Theater’s The Rocky Horror Show, later put on film in 1975 as The Rocky Horror Picture Show starring Tim Curry is a musical tribute to the Science Fiction and Horror B movies of the 1950s. Its book, music, and lyrics are by Richard O’Brien and premiered in London’s West End in 1973. The story revolves around sweethearts Brad Majors (John Haraden) and Janet Weiss (Alex Zinov) whose car breaks down in the middle of a storm. They are left with no option but to wander into the nearby castle asking to use the telephone. They soon meet Frank-N-Furter, a “sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania,” and Frank-N-Furter (Kenneth Starling)’s creation Rocky Horror (Thomas “TJ” Holt). The entire evening is filled with chaos, aliens, and sex.
Midvale Main Street Theatre harnesses excellent local talent and produces quality shows year-round –The Rocky Horror Show is no exception. Their venue is quaint and right in the heart of old-town Midvale. It is one of my favorite venues because of the ample amount of leg room with each seat. As a 6’4 gentleman, I can’t help but smile every time I sit down in their comfy chairs, stretch my legs, and order some food or drink to enjoy during the performance.
I was immediately blown away by the vocals of Haraden and Zinvo. Both leads are new to the MMST stage and together they become an adorable couple that the audience can’t help but relate to and laugh through the entire show. Haraden’s classically trained voice mixed with Zinov’s beautiful belt makes for the perfect combination in every duet.
The evening’s loudest applause came at the end of ‘Sweet Transvestite’ when the audience is first introduced to the extremely talented Starling. I would dare to say Starling’s vocals, energy, and presence on stage are equal to or greater than many Broadway performers. It is his first time on a Utah stage and all I can say is every other actor in the Valley better watch out for their new competition. Starling’s charisma as Frank-N-Furter won the audience over and stole the show.
It was easy to see the unity and teamwork created by the many supporting actors and ensemble in the show. Darsity Robles as The Criminologist handles the hecklers from the audience with such poise, and her improv skills sets the audience laughing every time. Holt has the body of a Greek god and has no inhibitions when flexing his muscles as Rocky Horror. Danny Eggers and Judith Hutchinson create a wonderful duo and play off of each other well as Riff Raff and Magenta. Every performer comes across confidently in their lines, dance moves, and vocals.
It truly feels like every actor is cast in their perfect role all due to the brilliant direction of Ryan Fallis. Fallis’ Assistant Director, Sean Mclaughlin, is also The Rocky Horror Show’s Scenic Designer for the show. The iconic red lips are always present, and the castle reveal brought audible excitement from the audience. Alexandria Zinov’s energetic choreography made great use of the entire space. I was impressed with how synchronized the performers were during the show-stopping numbers like “Time Warp” and “Sweet Transvestite”. No doubt Jason Campbell had his work cut out for him as Music Director. Each of the nearly 20 performers had multiple songs throughout the show. I was particularly impressed with “I’m Going Home” and the beautiful chords sang at the end of the numbers.
