In August 2012, some theater friends and I started Front Row Reviewers Utah. Our two main objectives were to write reviews that supported the acting community by saying positive things. This didn’t mean we didn’t point out problems in a show. But there are ways to say it and ways to say it. We chose the kinder, more supportive way. We know how it is to spend your own time and often your own dime to be in a show.
We also decided that our reviews should be up within 24 hours. We haven’t always made that deadline, but we are pretty darn perfect on this one. We know as actors what it feels like to wait and wait and wait for that review.
Until this year, Front Row Reviewers Utah has been a non-professional “hobby.” This year, I decided to go big or go home. That means, my goal was to cover every show in Utah ever until forever. Well, so far we’re doing pretty well. The business has grown 300%. We are able to review in theaters that have shut their doors to reviewers for years. We are getting exclusive interviews. We are making positive changes to the Utah arts community, one positively worded review at a time.
As a reviewer, since last October I have seen twenty-four shows, two of them twice (Broadway Bound at the Neil Simon Festival in Cedar City, and Guys and Dolls at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City.) I could have seen more and make it a commitment to do so in the next year—the year Front Row Reviewers Utah goes professional.

In this last year, I have seen performances that singed my eyeballs and cut my heart in half (metaphorically speaking) with their stark, painful, beautiful honesty. I have laughed my head off (again—metaphor). I’ve begged people to go see shows that mustn’t be missed. I have seen growth in the Utah theater community—in the amount of theater companies created, shows being performed, and the types of shows that are presented here. We have amazing diversity in Utah, and it is wonderful.
The biggest change we made in Front Row Reviewers Utah, besides reviewing a ton more shows, is we created a new tag: Celebrating the GOOD in Utah Arts. We have decided to branch out to other art productions, such as concerts, museums, opera, and more. We also have been doing Facebook live feeds and it is hilariously fun. Our live feeders are doing great and I’m so proud of them for their willing, funny, timely promotion for the shows they’re reviewing and the Front Row Reviewers Utah brand.
The other thing I have personally gained, and this sounds sort of lame because I’m so tickled about it, but it’s true: I have a TON of Facebook friends in the theater community—most in Utah but many elsewhere. I even have FB friends who want to review shows outside of Utah and I’m all for it. We’ll publish it. We support the arts, after all. And I add friends every day. Why? Because we’re all in this small pond together. We’re all working to celebrate the Utah arts. We all want to give something to our communities with our performances and/or our patronage. And our Front Row Reviewers Utah Facebook Page gets more and more likes every day. (Thank you!)
Thanks to all who’ve given support to, performed for, written for, shared, loved, commented on, and enjoyed Front Row Reviewers Utah. And thank you for helping us when we are Celebrating the GOOD in Utah Arts.
