Utah Festival’s production of REX at the Utah Theatre in beautiful downtown Logan is an intriguing blend of history, music, creativity, and wit. The musical tells the story of Henry VIII (Michael Ballam), England’s 16th Century king who is notorious for his six marriages and desire for a male heir. Throughout the production, we are given a deeper look into this complex and powerful king, who was highly intelligent, musical, and athletic. The story follows King Henry through his marriages, the birth of his three children, his relationships with members of his court, and ultimately to his successor. Originally performed on Broadway in 1976, REX was one of Richard Rodgers’ last musicals. Years after Rodgers’ death, the show’s lyricist, Sheldon Harnick and Sherman Yellen, who wrote the book, began to rewrite the show. Later, Maggie L Harrer, this production’s current director, was brought on board by Ballam to continue work on the new vision for the production. The end result is a work of heart that comes to fruition in this first ever production of the newly-imagined REX.
REX features 12 cast members, most of whom portray several characters, each with thrilling voices, impeccable character development, and captivating stage presence. Stefan Espinosa’s portrayal of The Fool is mesmerizing and thoroughly delightful. His jovial antics provide comic relief, even amid dark themes. Poignant and heartbreaking portrayals of Catherine of Aragon (Holly Sorensen), Anne Boleyn (Kristin K. Vogel), and Lady Jane (Kathleen Farrar Buccleugh) tug at the emotions and give insight into the plight of these historical figures. Princess Elizabeth (Aiden Ankli) is an inspiring example of a strong female role model. Ankli’s performance shows the intelligence, strength and charisma that made Queen Bess a beloved leader of her people. A tender and moving moment is shared between Elizabeth and her half-brother, Edward (Lily Virginia Allen) during the sweet and encouraging song, “In Time”, performed brilliantly by Ankli.
With rich, gorgeous costumes by Jennifer Sheshko Wood and an ingeniously creative set, designed by Anne M. Benson, which utilizes amazingly versatile pieces, REX is a feast for the eyes. This production is performed at the historic Utah Theatre whose renovation was completed in June, 2016. Audience members feel a part of the show in the cozy, nostalgic setting. Located just around the corner from the Ellen Eccles Theatre, the Utah Theatre offers another venue for Utah Festival repertoire performances.
History buffs will appreciate the timeline accuracy and insight into each of King Henry’s relationships. Part of the portrayal of these relationships and of the character of Henry VIII brings adult themes, sexual innuendo, and mistreatment of women and children. This show is definitely not for younger audiences, and may be offensive to some adults. I took my teenage son to the show, and found myself apologizing frequently on the way home. This performance is best reserved for mature audiences, as the storyline remains true to the legacy for which King Henry is known.
If you are a history buff, love beautiful music and acting, or are curious to see what Lerner’s last show was, Rex is a good choice for you.
