A Utah Theater Review by Megan Pederson

Little Women is the story of four sisters struggling through life while dreaming, fighting, falling in love and crying. Centerpoint Legacy’s production of Little Women is charming and strong.

If you come from a close family then there will be moments of this show that touch your heart. As the March sisters experience growing pains and the hardships of real life, there is one thing that remains consistent and strong, their love for each other.

The production is a beautiful one, aren’t they all at Centerpoint? The set design (Scott Van Dyke) of the March home was eloquent and clean. Allowing for an open home, the back drop and lighting design (Austin Hull) showcased the moods and emotions that were being portrayed on stage.

Director Leslie Giles-Smith did a good job making use of the space and drawing out the subtleties of the unspoken word. Maddie Tarbox (Jo March) finished the first act with a glorious number and at times her portrayal reminded me of the somewhat awkward and beloved Elphaba in Wicked. However, it also seemed that on more than one occasion she seemed a bit winded. The other March sisters and mother (Jillian Tirado, Caitlin Bird, Megan Smyth, Maurie Tarbox) were a joy to watch and did a fine job bringing their own unique characters to the production. And finally, Laurie (Connor Padilla) was such a fun character to watch and my laugh out loud moments were brought out by his quiet humor.

Sadly, I have to admit that I’ve never read the book that this show is based on so I only have this musical as a frame of reference. And apparently, I’m not a fan of the musical. I have to reiterate that the production was very well done but the script simply leaves a lot to be desired. I applaud the actors for pulling what they did out of the slightly two-dimensional characters, even though sometimes the weakness of the work couldn’t help but be noticed.

If you are a fan of the book or stories in this genre then you will likely enjoy the show. It is simple and sweet and has the heart of four sisters. It speaks to the truth of the family relationships and bonds that carry us through life and the independence of chasing our dreams around the world only to come home in the end.
