Salem Community Theater has done it again! Fright Night at KSCT Radio has become a beloved Halloween tradition in Salem, Utah, and this fifth annual production absolutely lives up to the hype. The moment the lights dim and the “broadcast” begins, the audience is transported straight back to the 1940s, seated as the live studio audience for KSCT Radio’s annual Halloween special. And, true to tradition, something goes just a little bit wrong during the night’s performance!

Directed by Alice Roberts, this year’s show feels especially polished and heartfelt. Roberts does a wonderful job showcasing the unique strengths of each performer, giving every cast member a moment to shine. The result is a lively, engaging, and utterly charming night of theater that has the audience laughing, gasping, and applauding throughout.

The show features two original radio thrillers written by local talents: Voyage of the Volantis by Marc Owens and When It Turns to Murder by Avery Dall-Hilton. Both stories are brilliantly written and performed, highlighting the incredible creative talent within the Salem community.

Voyage of the Volantis is a moving and imaginative sci-fi story following a brave crew that sets off to confront a mysterious cosmic anomaly threatening humanity. The story has an emotional depth that surprised me, and the original music is absolutely stunning! I caught myself humming the catchy melody as I left the theater.

The second act, When It Turns to Murder, completely flips the mood and has the audience roaring with laughter immediately. This clever and comedic detective tale follows an investigator and his assistant as they try to crack a local robbery case, meeting a cast of eccentric characters along the way. And of course, things take a murderous turn! I loved the energy of this witty story.

One of my favorite parts of Fright Night at KSCT Radio is always the sound, and this year’s production exceeds all expectations. The sound effects, performed live by Marian Scadden, are incredible. Each creak, crash, and footstep are perfectly timed and utterly immersive. The musical effects, led by Caitlin Phelps, add richness and depth to every scene, while Marcus Williams works behind the board as the sound engineer to bring it all together seamlessly. Together, this trio creates an auditory experience so vivid that you could close your eyes and feel like you are truly listening to a vintage radio broadcast.

The whole evening is pure joy from start to finish. This is a wonderfully spooky way to celebrate Halloween. Salem Community Theater continues to impress with their creativity, heart, and commitment to community-driven performances. If you’re looking for something unique to do this Halloween week, don’t miss this show! Fright Night at KSCT Radio runs for two more nights only: October 24th and 25th at 7 PM.
