Review by Brooklyn Gittins, Front Row Reviewers
If you’re looking for the perfect Halloween show to get you in the spooky spirit, look no further than Fright Night at KSCT Radio – War of the Worlds, performed by the Salem Community Theater in Salem, UT. Now in its fourth year, this annual show has become a local favorite, and it’s easy to see why. With its nostalgic 1940s setting, interactive audience experience, and classic radio thriller adaptations, it’s the ultimate way to celebrate Halloween.
The show is presented as if you’re sitting in a live studio audience for KSCT Radio’s annual Halloween special. Every year, something goes hilariously or eerily wrong during their broadcast, and the anticipation of seeing what unfolds this time adds to the fun. Under the direction of Marcus Williams, the cast gives an enthusiastic and engaging performance. It is obvious that they are having a blast on stage, making it just as fun for the audience to watch.
What sets this production apart is how interactive it feels. Watching the actors bring two “old-time radio” thriller classics to life is a treat. The live sound effects, performed masterfully by Marian Scadden, add an incredible layer of immersion. Every footstep, creaky door, and eerie wind sound transports the audience into the stories. Kelsey Eastmond on the organ is also a standout, providing the perfect spooky soundtrack throughout the show.
The first act, “The Pharaoh’s Revenge,” tells the chilling tale of a group of grave robbers who meet a terrible fate after disturbing the tomb of an ancient pharaoh. The storytelling is captivating, and the atmosphere in the theater is electric as the cast draws the audience into the mystery and suspense. Craig Gardner’s portrayal of Mark is wonderful, and I love the voices he uses.
Act Two, “The Shadows over Salem,” is an exciting War of the Worlds adaptation with a twist. This time, the alien invasion is set in the town of Salem, UT, leading to chaotic and humorous moments. Connor Shumway’s performance as Fred brings plenty of laughs, and I was always excited to see what he would do next.
All in all, Fright Night at KSCT Radio is a must-see for Halloween enthusiasts. It’s a family-friendly show that’s equal parts spooky and fun, making it the perfect weekend activity. Grab your tickets, bring your loved ones, and enjoy a thrilling night of live radio theater at Salem Community Theater—you won’t be disappointed!
