The Secret Garden is a beloved classic musical for good reason. The epic, gorgeous musical score and enchanting beloved story is a must see in any form and Payson Community Theatre has done it justice with their lovely production of the piece.

Emery Pinegar beautifully captures the nuanced role of Mary Lennox. Her command of the stage is impressive and she wonderfully captures the complex mesh of angry, grieving early Mary, with determined, caring, headstrong Mary of the story’s end. Her chemistry with the rest of the cast is palpable and makes the production captivating.

Talia Rowberry’s Martha presents the carefree and caring nature to her character beautifully. Her portrayal lights up the stage each time she steps onto it. It was fun to watch her small interactions with the props and other cast members even when the spotlight is off of her.

Lilly is exquisitely portrayed by Cecily Ellis-Bills and her performance is moving and exceptional in every way. Her vocal ability is incredible. “Come To My Garden” and “How Could I Ever Know?” literally brought tears to my eyes. It is well worth the price of a ticket just to hear her in these two numbers.

Miranda Mobbs (Mrs. Winthrop), Laura Holley (Mrs. Medlock), and Lydia Evans (Rose Lennox),display well-balanced grace, beauty, and wonderful authenticity that make their characters such memorable ones. Wherever she is onstage, I kept an eye on Emma Black as Ayah, who is enchanting to watch. Her movement is so beautiful and unique, and I loved her dancing sequences.

Perry Ewell (Dr. Nevlle Craven) brings a nefarious tone to his character (one of the villains of my childhood) in the best way. His nuanced performance is riveting as a man suffering from his own demons while trying to keep his family together as best he can.

Benjamin Ewell’s Dickon made me smile every time he entered the stage. He captures the warmth and whimsy of Dickon so authentically. His performances of “Show Me The Key” and “Wick” are easily some of my favorite moments of the production.

Bringing a wonderful understanding of Albert Lennox, Nathan Hessing is an unexpected highlight of The Secret Garden. He adds such genuine warmth and emotion that made his character a memorable one. His vocal performances are beautiful and his moments with Mary made me misty eyed.

Daniel Mason as Archibald Craven captures the character of a man bogged down by the darkest life has to offer but still trying to do what he knows is right. His wonderful performances of “A Bit of Earth”,”‘Lily’s Eyes”, and “Race You to the Top of the Morning” are beautiful and moving. His interactions with Colin and Mary made me misty eyed and even ugly cry in the finale. His is one of the best portrayals of Archbald I’ve had the privilege of watching.

Director Kristina Holley creates an enchanting and beautiful production of The Secret Garden. The casting is exceptional and magical. Her blending of drama and warmth makes this production enjoyable for audience members of all ages.

The choreography by Kate Wiscombe is a major highlight of the production. From the ballroom scenes to Ayah’s movements and dances, all are delightful. I can’t choose which number I love best. Wiscombe’s creativity is evident and adds an element of beauty to many of the more tragic scenes, making them hit harder.

The vocals in this production of The Secret Garden are top notch, thanks to Leni Thomson’s talent as Musical Director. Drawing out the best of the performer’s vocal talents, Thomson’s hard work and dedication shines through the incredibly moving musical performances.

Set Designer P. Ewell has created a gorgeous space for this musical, from the ballroom to the bedrooms. The ending scene of Act 1 when Mary finds the door of the garden is a show stopper visually. The Secret Garden set is absolutely spectacular, beautiful in every way. The wisteria dripping from the ceiling, the elegantly twisting vines, and imposing trees are all magnificent and add power to the actors’ moving performances.

Payson Community Theatres’ production of The Secret Garden is an enchanting, moving experience that is well worth your time. The incredible vocal performances, heartwarming story, and exceptional cast are a treat for the eyes and ears. This family friendly production brings the beloved classic tale to life in a most beautiful way.
