Today we’re chatting with Rio LeFevre about the upcoming production of SCRAM! A Meddling Kids Mystery! Let’s just jump right in!

FRR: What is the craziest or most creative way you can think of to summarize the plot of this production?

Rio LeFevre: Set in a cartoon version of the 1960s, a band of mystery-loving teens are thrust into their biggest, most dangerous, most musical case yet! Several terrifying murders have been committed by a masked maniac resembling Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” and a 90’s cult-classic horror franchise. It’s up to the Meddling Kids and their talking dog Rooby to save the day, but first they must overcome their own insecurities and discover what it truly means to be part of a team. Set to upbeat skater-boy punk music of the 2000’s, SCRAM! A Meddling Kids Mystery is a musical comedy sure to get audiences screaming with laughter. And also terror.

But mostly laughter.

FRR: That sounds wild! Lots of fun going on one stage! If you had to describe the process of putting on this show with one word, what would it be and why?

Rio LeFevre: Cartoonish. If I was going to describe the process in two words, I would say “cartoonishly delightful”. I’ve gotten to work with the most energetically funny people who have completely animated the script throughout the process.

FRR: What is the most interesting, funny, wonderful thing you’ve learned while working on SCRAM!?
Rio LeFevre: Pop-punk and musical theatre are surprisingly similar.

FRR: What are your favorite props?
Rio LeFevre: This show uses a lot of telephone props. Backstage, there are brick phones, hamburger phones, and endless phone chords for a very fun dance number.

FRR: Well, that sounds awesome! What do you do right before each performance to get ready?
Rio LeFevre: Courage Theatre has a shared tradition with Broadway! Starting in the 1950’s, a “Legacy Robe” was given to the ensemble member of a show with the most Broadway credits. This tradition has been adopted and re-imagined in theaters around the world. I first learned about this tradition in SUU‘s theatre department, where a “Broadway Coat” was given to a cast or crew member who went above and beyond to bring the show to life. At Courage Theatre, we have the “Courage Coat” which is given on opening night to someone who demonstrates exceptional courage.

FRR: That sounds marvelous. What a lovely tradition. Thank you so much for taking time to tell our followers about your wonderful production. Mark your calendars, theater lovers! This free-to-the-public production sounds like just the ticket!
