Attending the production of The Open Syrup at The Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival was like stepping into an episode of The Twilight Zone. You’re transported to a place with characters and backstories that you might not be familiar with, but you want to be immersed in. The audience is taken on a tour of the shenanigans, hijinks, and loveable characters that reside in The Open Syrup Hotel without ever leaving the lobby. The cast and crew work to put you into the story.

We love a comedic piece that points out the tropes and rituals of theatrical themes and archetypes in new and clever ways. From our aspiring femme fatale, Zoomy Gallumph, to hilariously unsolicited insights from the Aware Wolf and on to our brush with an unconventional God of Death-things are never quite what you would expect them to be. Small easter eggs of literature and philosophy are peppered throughout, along with call backs to previous episodes in The Open Syrup series that are sure to be appreciated by its own little cult following. This production is sweet with details and delectable tongue twisters.
For those who haven’t had the pleasure of attending the Fringe Festival, The Open Syrup is an excellent selection. The cast is clearly passionate about the world they’ve created, and they aren’t afraid to show it-or sing about it! Enjoy the intimate nature of this small-scale production and prepare to be inducted into a group of Syrup Heads who are dying to know-what crazy and kooky adventures will our favorite extradimensional hotel get into next?

Special regards to the amazing youth actors. It is an extraordinary privilege indeed to see young thespians with such fervor and devotion and The Open Syrup curates its characters and stories perfectly to their amazing performers.
