Tooele Valley Theatre‘s outdoor production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine‘s Into the Woods offers a spellbinding journey through fairy tales, brought to life with a harmonious blend. The natural outdoor setting enhances the production’s enchantment, immersing the audience in a whimsical, otherworldly atmosphere. This production doesn’t just tell a story – it invites you to step into a world where wishes come to life and consequences unfold with lyrical poignancy.
Into the Woods intricately weaves together the tales of classic fairy tale figures – Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack (of Beanstalk fame) – whose yearnings draw them into a mystical forest. In tandem, a Baker and his Wife, driven by the desire to break the curse of infertility, embark on their quest. Their paths intersect with a cunning Witch, charming Princes, a hungry wolf, and a formidable Giantess. As they pursue their aspirations, they confront the repercussions of their choices, grappling with themes of accountability and the intricate moral fabric that binds us all. Sondheim and Lapine’s narrative delves deep into the complexities of desire, family dynamics, and the enduring impacts of our narratives.
Amanda Debry‘s (Director) direction transforms the talented cast and crew into a magical evening that mesmerizes from the first note to the final bow. They are aware of the whole stage, providing levels and dimensions in the staging that keep the moments clear, the scenes engaging, and ultimately produce an exciting, fun-filled experience.
Julianne Ferguson (Cinderella) radiates with heartwarming and poignant qualities, their voice soars effortlessly under the sky. Their nuanced performance captures Cinderella’s innocence and resilience, making the journey all the more compelling. Cassidy Ellenberger (The Witch) delivers a menacing and exciting performance. Kennedi Drake (Little Red) is both fierce and endearing.
Chad Henwood (The Baker) and Lucile Johnson (The Baker’s Wife) anchor the fantastical narrative into relatable human emotion. Henwood’s heartfelt rendition of “No More” and Johnson’s poignant performance of “Moments in the Woods” highlight their dramatic range, making their characters compelling.
Raine Eldredge (Jack) infuses their performance with youthful exuberance and sincerity. Bekki Hopkins (Jack’s Mother) delivers a touching and humorous turn as Jack’s long-suffering mother, their scenes brimming with warmth. Kai Freeman (Milky White) delightfully adds a touch of whimsy and charm to the story with their puppeteering.
In dual roles, Tony Ellenberger (The Narrator/The Mysterious Man) adds intrigue, guiding the audience through the complex narrative. Ian Rockwell (Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf) and Ryan Munsey (Rapunzel’s Prince) bring charisma and comedic flair to their roles, their duet “Agony” evoking giggles and cheering.
Emily Henwood choreographs lively and imaginative sequences, utilizing the outdoor setting to its fullest potential. Brianna Lyman designs costumes that reflect each character’s unique personality and story with detail.
Tooele Valley Theatre’s Into the Woods delights as a production that beautifully marries the timelessness of fairy tales with the immediacy of live theatre. This outdoor performance delivers a lovely evening, demonstrating the power of community theatre to transport and transform.
