Interview with the Stars and Director of “Red, White and Tuna”
FRR: Dan, Brandon, how do you keep track of all your characters and costume changes?
Dan: Well, it’s all about muscle memory at this point. My dresser, who I’ve nicknamed “The Costume Fairy,” is the real hero. Plus, I’ve got a cheat sheet taped to the inside of my dressing room mirror.
Brandon: I’ve considered tattooing my character list on my arm. But really, the chaos backstage is half the fun. We’ve got it down to a fine art of organized madness.
FRR: Who’s more likely to break character first during a performance?
Dan: Brandon, definitely. He’s got this one character, Bertha Bumiller, who makes him laugh every time. I’ve seen him turn away from the audience to compose himself more than once.
Brandon: Guilty as charged! Dan’s Arles Struvie always gets me. That and our director Heather’s constant giggles from the booth don’t help my composure!
FRR: Which character do you enjoy playing the most?
Dan: I love playing Petey Fisk. He’s earnest and passionate about animals, and there’s something endearing about his obliviousness. And I get to wear this ridiculous hat that always gets a laugh.
Brandon: I have a soft spot for Pearl Burras. She’s sassy, a little bit nosy, and has the best lines. Plus, I get to wear these fantastic mop cap that make everything ten times funnier.
FRR: Heather, what’s the hardest part of directing this show?
Heather: Keeping a straight face! Honestly, managing the logistics of the rapid costume changes is a huge challenge, but watching Dan and Brandon bring these characters to life makes it all worth it. Their energy is infectious, and sometimes it’s hard to stay serious.
FRR: Any funny backstage moments you can share?
Dan: There was this one time Brandon got stuck halfway through a costume change and ended up on stage wearing half a dress and no shoes. We had to improvise an entire scene around it!
Brandon: And let’s not forget the time Dan’s wig went flying into the audience. What are you going to do but laugh?
