With vibrant hues and rhythmic beats, the Sandbox Theatre Company and South Jordan Arts Council transport audiences on an exhilarating journey with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Director Karyn Tucker’s masterful vision transforms the stage into a tapestry of storytelling and music. This production not only showcases the extraordinary talents of its cast and crew but also immerses theatergoers in a spellbinding experience that captures the essence of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s beloved classic.

The infectious energy of the cast takes hold from the first beat, sweeping the audience into a whirlwind of color and sound. At my performance, the crowd found themselves dancing and clapping along, blurring the lines between spectators and participants. Jake Hendriksen (Joseph) is remarkably captivating. His charisma and powerful vocals anchor the production. And, in a delightful twist, a stage kiss with a real llama (courtesy of The Farm Animal Rescue) adds a new touch of whimsical humor that will leave everyone in stitches. This production doesn’t just tell a story; it creates a joyous, communal experience.

The three narrators (Brittany Weidauer, Dawn Ramsey, and Marisol Peterson) are a standout feature. Their voices blend beautifully to create a harmonious backdrop throughout the show. Each narrator brings a unique flair. Whether through their expressive gestures or the playful props they wield, they always enhance the story without ever overshadowing it. Equally delightful are the adorable youth performers, who bring a fun energy and charm to the stage. Additionally, the featured dancers are nothing short of stunning. Their graceful movements and intricate choreography (courtesy of Jennifer Davies) add brilliance to the performance. Their presence elevates the production, making it a visual and auditory feast for the audience.

Joseph’s brothers bring an additional layer of excitement to the show. Ben Chapman (Naphtali) is hilarious in “One More Angel in Heaven.” I was amazed at his ability to make me laugh during such a mournful part of the story. Treyson Lyon shines as Judah during “Benjamin Calypso,” captivating the audience with his impressive dance moves—his hips can really move. Overall, the brothers’ facial expressions and commitment to every scene are simply amazing. Their collective energy is such a blast.

Praise is certainly due to the producer, Bridgette Stowell, and the incredible team behind the scenes of this production. The staging (Sierra Loertscher) is beautiful. The set design (Jeff Davis), set builder (Curt Stowell) adds to the whimsical feel of story time, transporting the audience into Joseph’s world. The dynamic lighting (David Bruner), which changes with the beat, brings each scene to life and adds a mesmerizing visual element to the show. The costumes (Madison Harris and Tammy Peterson) are equally impressive, capturing the vibrant essence of the story and enhancing each character’s presence on stage. The combined efforts of the set, lighting, and costume designers create a rich, immersive experience. Music Director Kelly Rollins created a beautiful panorama of Joseph‘s many variety of its songs. Each song and each singer is right on point and the final product proves this. Props by Lili Bryson as Prop Mistress and designer give this show such an intricate and interesting added reality and whimsy.

This production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat promises an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages. Every aspect of this show comes together to create a truly magical journey. Whether you’re a fan of musical theater or simply looking for an evening of joy and entertainment, this show delivers on all fronts.
