Review by Kendra Hanna, Front Row Reviewers
Titus Productions Theatre Company’s production of Steel Magnolias at the Midvale Performing Arts Center is a stunning rendition of Robert Harling’s script. Based in 1980s Chinquapin, Louisiana, Steel Magnolias follows the story of six women who come together for Saturday morning gossip sessions, treatments to look beautiful, and give support and friendship–and it all takes place in a beauty parlor. Director and Costume Designer Jake Andersen brings the story to the stage with unrivaled authenticity. With a set designed by Michael Thrall and props by Marie Nugter, the beauty shop comes to life right in front of our eyes in a perfectly intimate performance space.
From the very beginning, Rossy Thrall (Truvy) and Katie Whiteley (Annelle) shine as Annelle nervously does Truvy’s hair, applying for the job that just might save her life. R. Thrall expertly exemplifies that special hair-dresser familiarity with complete strangers as well as the intimacy of long-standing friendships. Whiteley’s nervous attempts at finding her place amidst an already established rapport are delightfully endearing.
JoAnn Galloway’s portrayal of Ouiser is exceptionally spectacular. Her all-consuming crotchetiness is perhaps the highlight of the entire show. Every time Ouiser opens her mouth, her cutting remarks are guaranteed to inspire gales of laughter from the audience. Tanya Walton (Clairee) brings a kind and brash personality to the character that captivates and enthralls. She manages to navigate the line between sincerity and showing off with alacrity.
Emma-Claire Polich’s brave and impetuous portrayal of Shelby and her struggle against the limitations of her diabetes is simply inspiring. The journey of Shelby’s character from her wedding day to the day before her ill-fated kidney transplant is deeply compelling, owing largely to the tangible determination Polich brings to the role. Becca Nielsen’s steady and understated presence as M’Lynn is a beautiful, grounding influence over the course of the entire play, until the final scene, when her composure finally breaks. Nielsen’s performance of the monologue about her dear daughter’s life is a gut-wrenching moment that lingers with the audience long after the actors have taken their final bows.
Steel Magnolias by Titus Productions Theatre Company is not a performance to be missed. With delightful performances from the actors, a cozy performance space, and a friendly atmosphere, this production of Steel Magnolias is an insightful and hilarious exploration of the most beautiful and terrible parts of both womanhood and life in general.
