In an interview with Board Member, Reviewer, Editor/Publisher Kathryn Olsen, she answered a few questions for us.
Please tell me why you like being on the board for Front Row Reviewers.
I always say that this is the job I wish I could do full-time, as it brings me such joy. I am extremely passionate about the mission of Celebrating the GOOD in the Arts and being a board member means that I play a larger role in that mission than I would have otherwise. It makes my week when I have to explore different perspectives and options regarding how we can best serve the arts community and it seems to be a natural extension of my role in mentoring some of the newer reviewers.
Please tell me why you think FRR has value.
I’ve been involved in the arts since before I entered elementary school, whether as a violinist or a member of “The Showbiz Kids.” I was fortunate that my parents not only supported my desire to study music, but also sought out orchestras and choirs for me to join. I found that the best approach for fostering my continuing efforts in the arts was a supportive community that saw the hard work instead of the occasional errors. Every time I look for the positive in a performance, I’m reminded that those in the arts need encouragement and validation at every stage of their careers, just as I did as a child. I have seen FRR give a new artist their first professional review, but also provide recognition for the skills of a Broadway actress.
Please tell me what you do in real life.
My ordinary job is as a case manager with a disability firm. I assist clients who are applying for disability benefits throughout their application and appeals as needed. In my spare time, I am also a published author (under the name Kaki Olsen–see her work on Amazon here) and a volunteer crisis counselor with The Trevor Project.
Kathryn is all an organization could want. She’s more than a mere volunteer. She is a trusted associate and has kept FRR together almost single-handedly during the pandemic. Kathryn brings her extensive knowledge about ballet, dance, music, theatre and other art forms to Front Row Reviewers and we are blessed she’s part of our organization. She continues to define what it means to be supportive of the arts–she is amazing. Thank you, Kathryn!
